In an embodiment of the invention, a processed sensor structure having two generally opposing surfaces is provided, wherein each of the opposing surfaces have different surface affinities, with a first optical structure formed on one of the opposing surfaces, and a second optical structure formed on the other of the opposing surfaces. The chemically and optically asymmetric opposing surfaces will spontaneously align at an organic liquid/water interface. Changes in the optical response of at least one of the opposing surfaces indicate the presence of a particular analyte for sensing applications.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2004Date of Patent: January 15, 2008Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Jamie R. Patent number: 7318904Abstract: A method of forming metal nanoparticles using a polymer colloid that includes at least one conductive polymer and at least one polyelectrolyte. Metal ions are reduced in water by the conductive polymer to produce the nanoparticles, which may be then incorporated in the colloidal structure to form a colloid composite. The method can also be used to separate selected metal ions from aqueous solutions.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 2005Date of Patent: January 15, 2008Assignee: Los Alamos National Security, LLCInventors: Hsing-Lin Wang, Wenguang Li

Patent number: 7318905Abstract: A decorative sheet (S) for in-mold decorating injection molding has a base sheet (1A) and a resin layer (2) formed on a surface of the base sheet (1A) to be brought into contact with an injection-molded molding and containing an acrylic-modified polyolefin resin. The acrylic-modified polyolefin resin is a resin composed by grafting-copolymerizing an acrylic monomer and/or an acrylic prepolymer on principal chains of a polypropylene resin. The decorative sheet (S) includes, for example, a base sheet (1A) of an acrylic resin, a decorative layer (3) of a binder resin and at least either an acrylic resin contained in the binder resin or a polyvinyl chloride-acetate resin, and a bonding layer (2) containing an acrylic-modified polyolefin resin. A primer layer (4) may be sandwiched between the bonding layer (2) and the decorative layer (3).Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 2005Date of Patent: January 15, 2008Assignee: Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd.Inventor: Hideyuki Iriyama

Patent number: 7318906Abstract: A preformed of SiC fiber, which is coated with one or more of C, BN and SiC, is impregnated with a slurry, which suspends fine SiC powder and a sintering additive therein. The impregnated preform is hot-pressed at 1600-1800° C. with a pressure of 10 MPa or more. The sintering additive may be one or more of Al2O3, Y2O3, SiO2 and CaO. The slurry may futher contain a silicone polymer selected from polycarbosilane, polyvinylsilane and polymethylsilane. Reaction of SiC fiber with a matrix is inhibited by the coating, so as to manufacture a SiC fiber-reinforced SiC-matrix composite remarkably improved in mechanical properties.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2001Date of Patent: January 15, 2008Assignee: Japan Science and Technology CorporationInventors: Akira Kohyama, Yutai Katoh

Patent number: 7318907Abstract: Methods and apparatus for producing small, bright nanometric light sources from apertures that are smaller than the wavelength of the emitted light. Light is directed at a surface layer of metal onto a light barrier structure that includes one or more apertures each of which directs a small spot of light onto a target. The incident light excites surface plasmons (electron density fluctuations) in the top metal surface layer and this energy couples through the apertures to the opposing surface where it is emitted as light from the apertures or from the rims of the apertures. Means are employed to prevent or severely limit the extent to which surface plasmons are induced on the surface at the aperture exit, thereby constraining the resulting emissions to small target areas.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 2002Date of Patent: January 15, 2008Assignee: President and Fellows of Harvard CollegeInventors: Peter Randolph Hazard Stark, Dale N. Patent number: 7318908Abstract: Integrated nanotube sensors are adapted for detecting various chemical and biological molecules. In one implementation, nanotube sensor arrays are formed as nano-electronic noses capable of such detection, and can be implemented in devices including carbon nanotube-based electronic noses and biochips. Various implementations of the present invention are also directed to nanoscience and nanotechnology applications, such as medical, military and biological applications. In a more particular implementation, nanotubes are produced on full-scale wafers and functionalized. In another more particular implementation, functionalized nanotubes are integrated into addressable devices. With these approaches, various aspects of the present invention have been found to be useful in sensor applications having small size, high density and extreme sensitivity. Such sensor applications are applicable to many aspects of society, and can be implemented for making human lives more safe, secure and healthy.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2002Date of Patent: January 15, 2008Assignee: The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior UniversityInventor: Hongjie Dai
