  • Patent number: 7322184
Abstract: A particulate matter deposit amount in a diesel particulate filter (4) provided in an exhaust passage (3) of a diesel engine (1) for a vehicle is estimated on the basis of a pressure loss in the filter (4), which is detected by a differential pressure sensor (12). When the temperature of the differential pressure sensor (12) is not within a predetermined temperature range, estimation of the particulate matter deposit amount based on the pressure loss is restricted, and instead, the particulate matter deposit amount is estimated by accumulating a particulate matter deposit amount per unit time. In so doing, increases in the estimation error outside of the predetermined temperature range are prevented. Moreover, by applying these estimation methods selectively in accordance with the vehicle speed, the precision with which the particulate matter deposit amount is estimated outside of the predetermined temperature range is improved.

  • Patent number: 7322185
Abstract: A particulate matter deposit amount accumulated in a diesel particulate filter (4) is calculated as a first particulate matter deposit amount from a pressure loss of the filter (4) (S33). The particulate matter deposit amount accumulated in the filter (4) is calculated as a second particulate matter deposit amount from another parameter (S34). It is determined whether or not there is front end blockage of the filter (4) based on a comparison between the first particulate matter deposit amount and second particulate matter deposit amount (S36, S43). When there is a front end blockage of the filter (4), the regeneration device is controlled to perform regeneration of the filter (4) for a longer period than the normal regeneration period of the filter (4) (S22).

  • Patent number: 7322186
Abstract: In an exhaust gas purifying apparatus for a diesel engine having a diesel particulate filter provided in an exhaust pipe, a pressure loss at the filter is detected. An accumulated amount of diesel particulates in the filter is calculated based on the pressure loss and a map for a relationship between the pressure loss and the accumulated amount. A compulsory re-generating operation is carried out when the calculated accumulated amount reaches at a predetermined threshold value, which is decreased to a smaller value depending on a combustion amount of the diesel particulates which are combusted and removed from the filter as a natural re-generating operation.

  • Patent number: 7322191
Abstract: A device for imparting a whirling motion on the flow of air for supplying a turbo-supercharged internal-combustion engine is designed to be interposed in the duct for supplying the air upstream of the supercharger for supercharging the engine. The device comprises an elbow-shaped portion of duct and partializing means, which are able to limit the section of passage in the upstream branch of the aforesaid elbow portion to an area which constitutes a fraction of the total section of the duct and which is adjacent to a wall of the duct. In this way, the downstream branch of the elbow portion is reached by a tangential flow that gives rise to a helical flow of the air in said downstream branch. The device enables creation upstream of the supercharger of a negative pressure sufficient for enabling a recirculation of exhaust gases, upstream of the supercharger, and at the same time imparts on the air flow a whirling movement that enables the supercharger to be exploited in the most efficient way.

  • Patent number: 7322197
Abstract: Variable rate ignition method and system that take advantage of knowledge and analysis of environmental conditions and/or operational conditions. A variable ignition rate for igniting the engine permits an optimal use of the igniters and thereby prolongs their life as well as its associated maintenance schedule. • Patent number: 7322198
Abstract: A gas stream with a reduced oxygen concentration relative to ambient air is used to vaporize a liquid fuel or liquefied higher hydrocarbon gas, or is mixed with a vaporized gas, and the reduced oxygen vaporized fuel gas is fed to a combustion device such as a premixed or diffusion combustor. Preferably, the oxygen content of the gas stream is less than the limiting oxygen index. By mixing the fuel with a gas stream that has an appropriately reduced oxygen content, auto-ignition prior to the desired flame location in the combustor can be avoided. In some embodiments, the reduced oxygen stream is generated from an air separator or taken from the exhaust of the combustion device.
