  • Patent number: 7378158
Abstract: Structural components that are subject to high stresses, especially caused by wear, can be protected by coating them with a hard material. For metal-cutting tools it is for example known that their wear resistance can be improved by coating them with a hard material. Different thermal expansion coefficients of the substrate material and the coating material and different layer materials in a multilayer coating may produce great stresses. The stress increases as the thickness of the coating increases, thereby increasing the danger of the coating chipping off. In order to solve this problem, the invention proposes an intermediate layer (5) to be interposed between at least two layers (4, 9) of the coating (3), said intermediate layer mainly or exclusively consisting of a material component (6, 8) of an element of the fourth to eighth subgroup of the fourth and fifth period of the periodic system.

  • Patent number: 7378181
Abstract: An electric storage battery and method of manufacture thereof characterized by a feedthrough pin which is internally directly physically and electrically connected to an inner end of a positive electrode substrate. A C-shaped mandrel extends around the pin and substrate end enabling the pin/mandrel to be used during the manufacturing process as an arbor to facilitate winding layers of a spiral jellyroll electrode assembly. The pin additionally extends from the battery case and in the final product constitutes one of the battery terminals with the battery case comprising the other terminal. Active material is removed from both sides of the outer end of the negative electrode in the jellyroll to allow room for adhesive tape to secure the jellyroll. The electrolyte is injected through the open end of the case after the endcap is welded to the negative electrode but before sealing the endcap to the case. The electrolyte is preferably injected through the C-shaped mandrel to facilitate and speed filling.

Abstract: To present a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery using iron compound which is inexpensive and abundant in resource, as the active material for the positive electrode. An iron compound with particle size of 1 to 300 nm or less, being composed of substantially spherical primary particles of pore-free matter, is used as the active material for a positive electrode, which is used together with a negative electrode and a nonaqueous electrolyte for composing the battery. By forming the primary particles for composing particles of the iron compound as a pore-free matter, being controlled in a range of 1 to 300 nm, nano effects are brought about, and it is also effective to suppress excessive increase of surface area which may lead to promotion of decomposition of electrolyte, and an excellent discharge capacity is realized stably for a long period.
