Publication number: 20080142262Abstract: Core drill bits with long crown heights are described herein. The core drill bits have a series of slots or openings that are not located at the tip of the crown and are therefore enclosed in the body of the crown. The slots may be staggered and/or stepped throughout the crown. As the cutting portion of the drill bit erodes through normal use, the fluid/debris notches at the tip of the bit are eliminated. As the erosion progresses, the slots become exposed and then they function as fluid/debris ways. This configuration allows the crown height to be extended and lengthened without substantially reducing the structural integrity of the drill bit. And with an extended crown height, the drill bit can last longer and require less tripping in and out of the borehole to replace the drill bit.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2006Publication date: June 19, 2008Inventors: K. Publication number: 20080142273Abstract: A drill bit assembly comprises a bit body intermediate a shank and a working face. The shank is adapted for connection to a drill string. The drill string comprising a fluid passage at least partially disposed within the body. A hammer assembly is movably disposed within the fluid passage along it central axis, the hammer assembly comprises a proximal end stabilized by a centralized upper bearing and a distal end stabilized by centralized a lower bearing. The distal end protrudes out of the working face and the hammer assembly comprises a carrier between the upper and lower bearings. Wherein, under normal drilling operations the carrier is adapted to resist a fluid pressure within the fluid passageway such that the fluid pressure will further extend the distal end of the hammer assembly from the working face by pushing on the carrier.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 26, 2008Publication date: June 19, 2008Inventors: David R. Publication number: 20080142275Abstract: A polycrystalline diamond cutting element for earth boring drill bits presents regions of different abrasion resistance to the earthen formation when in operation. The cutting element has an end working surface and a region which is substantially free of catalyzing material, forming a layer. In operation, this layer wears at a different rate than the underlying material causing a pair of protruding lips to form. The end working surface may be substantially planar or frusto-conical in form.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 26, 2008Publication date: June 19, 2008Inventors: Nigel Dennis Griffin, Peter Raymond Hughes, Andrew Bell

Publication number: 20080142276Abstract: Thermally stable ultra-hard compact constructions comprise a polycrystalline diamond body substantially free of a catalyst material, and a substrate that is joined thereto. The substrate can be ceramic, metallic, cermet and combinations thereof, and can be joined to the body by a braze material or other material that forms an attachment bond at high pressure/high temperature conditions. The body and substrate are specially formed having complementary interfacing surface features to facilitate providing an improved degree of attachment therebetween. The complementary surface features can in the form of openings and projections, e.g., one of the body or substrate can comprise one or more openings, and the other of the body or substrate can comprise one or more projections, disposed within or extending from respective interfacing surfaces. The complementary surface features operate to resist unwanted delamination between the body and substrate, thereby extending effective service life of the construction.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 8, 2007Publication date: June 19, 2008Applicant: SMITH INTERNATIONAL, INC.Inventors: Anthony GRIFFO, Madapusi K. Publication number: 20080142277Abstract: There is disclosed an apparatus and method which is capable of dispensing very small (typically less than 5 mg) quantities of particles to a high accuracy in a repeatable way and without undue wastage. Also, the need for advanced particle formulation is reduced. The apparatus comprises a closed loop control system which uses an electro-mechanical actuator to deliver impact energy to a supply of particles initially held on a sieve in a hopper. The impact energy causes a small number of particles to fall through the sieve and onto a weight measuring balance. The weight obtained is scrutinised by a processor to see if further actuations are required. In preferred embodiments, the energy of actuation is varied in accordance with the rate of dispensation calculated by the processor. Also, a correction amount can be obtained to take account of the fact that the balance can take a considerable amount of time to settle to its final value.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 21, 2008Publication date: June 19, 2008Inventors: Bruce MacMichael, Duncan Westland
