Publication number: 20080173817Abstract: The present invention provides very small low cost apparatus and method for determining the concentration and/or hazard from a target gas by means of optically monitoring one or more sensors that responds to carbon monoxide. The apparatus comprises a photon source optically coupled to the sensor and the photon intensity passing through the sensor is quantified by one or more photodiode(s) in a system, so that the photon flux is a function of at least one sensor's response to the target gas, e.g., transmits light through the sensor to the photodiode. The photocurrent from the photodiode is converted to a sensor reading value proportional to the optical characteristics of the sensors and is loaded into a microprocessor or other logic circuit. In the microprocessor, the sensor readings may be differentiated to determine the rate of change of the sensor readings and the total photons absorbed value may be used to calculated the CO concentration.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 13, 2007Publication date: July 24, 2008Inventors: Mark K. Publication number: 20080173818Abstract: Two sensor units are mounted on opposite sides of a transom of a boat and directed to a common location behind the boat. The field of view of the two sensors overlaps behind the marine propulsion unit of the boat to detect the presence of a heat emitting object, such as a mammal. Housing structures contain infrared sensing elements, lenses, and light shields. Signals from four infrared sensing elements are received by a controller which reacts, with an alarm signal, when at least two of the four sensors detect a heat emitting object within their individual fields of view. False triggering can be reduced by not providing an alarm signal if only the two most inboard sensors detect the heat emitting object.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 22, 2007Publication date: July 24, 2008Inventor: Richard E. Publication number: 20080173825Abstract: The method shows how to violate predictions of quantum mechanics for matter. For light, the method has been disclosed in patent application Photon Violation Spectroscopy. The methods are different in specifying different methods for light and matter. For matter, the method typically uses the single 5.5 MeV alpha (He++) emitted from the radioisotope Americium-241 in spontaneous decay, a thin gold foil beam splitter, and two surface barrier alpha detectors. The detectors deliver a characteristic electrical pulse with amplitude proportional to matter wave energy. A circuit reads the coincidence rate and singles rates of pulses from the two detectors. Quantum mechanics predicts that the particle would go one way or the other at the beam splitter, and coincident detections of pulses characteristic of such a particle would occur only at an easily calculated chance rate. However, the method at hand shows such characteristic pulses occur in coincidence at a rate greatly exceeding chance.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 9, 2008Publication date: July 24, 2008Inventor: Eric Stanley Reiter

Publication number: 20080173829Abstract: A high-brightness pulsed electron source, which has the potential for many useful applications in electron microscopy, inverse photo-emission, low energy electron scattering experiments, and electron holography has been described. The source makes use of Cs atoms in an atomic beam. The source is cycled beginning with a laser pulse that excites a single Cs atom on average to a band of high-lying Rydberg nP states. The resulting valence electron Rydberg wave packet evolves in a nearly classical Kepler orbit. When the electron reaches apogee, an electric field pulse is applied that ionizes the atom and accelerates the electron away from its parent ion. The collection of electron wave packets thus generated in a series of cycles can occupy a phase volume near the quantum limit and it can possess very high brightness. Each wave packet can exhibit a considerable degree of coherence.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 16, 2007Publication date: July 24, 2008Inventor: Max Zolotorev

Publication number: 20080173831Abstract: An optoelectronic sensor for detecting objects in a monitored region which has light emitters and associated light receivers adjustably arranged relative to each other so that light emitted by the light emitter is directly received by the light receiver. The light emitter and the light receiver conform to normed requirements which define a normed region that is free of reflecting surfaces so that light emitted by the light emitter which passed beyond the normed region cannot be received by the light receiver due to a reflection of such light. Publication number: 20080173835Abstract: A regulator on a valve mechanism for controlled release of pressurized gas from a container. The valve mechanism includes a valve body mounted within a top of the container, a reciprocating core, a return spring, and a resilient sealing gasket. A tubular stem extends upwardly from the core and through an opening in the top of the container. The gasket maintains an airtight seal between a gas flow passage in the valve body and the stem, thereby preventing release of the gas from the container while the spring holds the valve body in a normally closed position in sealed engagement with the gasket. Forced movement of the stem, against the spring, allows passage of the pressurized gas into an axial bore of the stem for release out from a nozzle tip of a cap fitted to the stem. A flow regulator is fitted to the lower end of the valve body and provides a pinhole opening sized according to the desired gas release flow rate.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 23, 2007Publication date: July 24, 2008Inventor: Louis D. Publication number: 20080173836Abstract: In a Valve, grid-patterned, fixed wall(s) and movable gate plate/plug are built in the hub to control the conduction area. Adjustable spring is applied to push the gate/plug firmly against the fixed wall(s). The structure alteration reduces the travel length required to switch the valve between open and closed states. Since the open/close state is self-sustaining at its last switched state due to friction, no holding energy is required in the actuator. Consequently, a small linear operation solenoid can be used in impulse mode to operate the valve. Due to its low cost, separate solenoids are used to respectively pull open and close the valve in lieu of applying an auto-direction-conversion mechanism. A bimetallic strip contact in series with a resister, packaged together in a thermal isolating tube, is used to prevent the low-duty solenoid from excessive stress-time.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 14, 2007Publication date: July 24, 2008Inventor: Shy-Shiun Chern

Publication number: 20080173864Abstract: A CNT transistor has source extension 36a and drain extension 36b that shunt electrical current and reduce the effective CNT resistance and allow significant reductions in fringe capacitances 28 30. The extensions 36a 36b are electrically conductive, and are electrically connected to the source electrode 22 and drain electrode 24. The extensions each span a portion of gaps 35a 35b. Consequently, the source and drain can be located relatively far from the gate electrode 26, thereby reducing the fringe capacitances 28 30. Nanotube 20 is a semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube, and the extensions 36a 36b comprise metallic-conducting nanotubes surrounding and coaxial with the nanotube 20. The nanotube 20 and extensions 36a 36b are fabricated from a multiwalled nanotube by selectively removing outer nanotubes in a region near the gate electrode. Alternatively, the extensions 36a 36b can comprise metal deposited on peripheral portions of the semiconducting CNT 20.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 20, 2007Publication date: July 24, 2008Inventors: Shinobu Fujita, Bipul C.
