Publication number: 20080282787Abstract: In a method for diagnosing a storage-capable catalytic converter of an internal combustion engine which is supplied with sufficiently hot exhaust gas so that its temperature is above the starting temperature of the exhaust gas, it is proposed that the catalytic converter is briefly supplied with cooler exhaust gas so that a cold wave passing through it forms, that the axial position of the cold wave within the catalytic converter is computed, and that the size of the storage unit is determined from the signal of an exhaust gas probe connected downstream from the catalytic converter relative to the axial position of the cold wave. According to the invention, a differentiated diagnosis method is made available by which not only the axial position or the region of damage of the storage unit can be determined, but by which the reduction of conversion of a certain pollutant A,B caused by the axial position of the damage can be indicated.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 22, 2007Publication date: November 20, 2008Applicant: Audi AGInventor: Bodo Odendall

Publication number: 20080282790Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus or system for determining an amount of coal tar that can enter, and subsequently be displaced from, a given type of soil for a range of depths of the soil. The method and apparatus also provide verification of the pressure at which coal tar can be displaced from a given type of soil. In particular, the method and apparatus simulate the hydrostatic pressure that a soil sample encounters in the subsurface of the ground. Accordingly, the method and apparatus provide a relationship between the concentration of coal tar in the soil and the pressure required to displace the coal tar from the soil, which allows for an estimation of the amount of coal tar that may be displaced at a particular location or site. Further, the method and apparatus are adaptable for use in the laboratory or the field.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 24, 2008Publication date: November 20, 2008Applicant: Lehigh UniversityInventors: Horace Keith Moo-Young, Derrick Brown, Andrew J. Publication number: 20080282791Abstract: A simply configured thermal flowmeter can provide high measurement accuracy over a long period of time by suppressing the characteristics degradation due to adhering contaminants. On the surface of a diaphragm part, a heater resistor is formed. Temperature difference sensors through are disposed on the two sides of the heater resistor (upstream and downstream sides in the flow direction of an air stream). The temperature difference sensors are disposed upstream of the heater resistor while the temperature difference sensors are disposed downstream of the heater resistor. Outside the temperature difference sensors, heating temperature sensors are formed. Control is performed so that the temperature of the heating temperature sensors is set higher than the air stream temperature by a certain degree. Therefore, even if contaminants adhere to the sensor device, the temperature of the heating temperature sensors is held constant.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 15, 2008Publication date: November 20, 2008Applicant: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Hiroshi NAKANO, Masahiro Matsumoto, Keiji Hanzawa

Round angles with the same radius are formed on the outer edges for contacting rollers. Thereby, the roller chain of the present invention can avoid the two problems of the stress centralization of the rollers and the excessively small contact length of the rollers, further to lift the load capability of the roller screw.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 15, 2007Publication date: November 20, 2008Inventors: Hung-Sung PAN, Wen-Chia Wu

Publication number: 20080282827Abstract: This invention relates to a kind of gear pair for power transmission in speed increaser or reducer and its tooth profile forming method, the tooth profiles of driving gear (1) and driven gear (2) are separately designed from the reference points, the upper tooth profiles (15, 25) are composed of conjugate curves, while the lower tooth profiles (14, 24) are composed of smooth convex analytic curves. The reference point (22) of the driven gear (2) situates near the middle of the working depth, while the reference point (12) on the tooth profile (11) of the driving gear (1) and the reference point (22) on the driven gear tooth flank (21) are a pair of conjugate point This invention can greatly enhance the load capacity of the gear pair.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 27, 2006Publication date: November 20, 2008Inventors: Hong Jiang, Xiaochun Wang

Publication number: 20080282828Abstract: Mechanical systems and methods are disclosed for pointing a plurality of elements in an array in any direction within a near-hemispherical field of view without pointing the entire array as a single unit. A fixed frame and an adjuster frame disposed substantially parallel to and offset from each other are each coupled by universal joints to carriers for a plurality of elements. One or more drive mechanisms are used to move the adjuster frame relative to the fixed frame to produce coordinated pointing of the pointing axes of the plurality of elements. The systems and methods can be used in a variety of applications including pointing of solar concentrator receivers or antennas.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 19, 2007Publication date: November 20, 2008Applicant: The Boeing CompanyInventor: Russell K. Publication number: 20080282829Abstract: An actuating device is provided for a technical system, especially for selecting gears of a shift-by-wire speed-change gear. The actuating device includes an actuating element (1), which is movable in relation to a base area (3), with at least two switching positions. At least one additional switching element (5), which acts on a signal transmission (8) with a signal transmitter (6), is arranged at the actuating element (1). The additional switching element (5) and the signal transmitter (8) are connected by means of a mechanical transmission means. However, the signal transmitter (6) is connected to the base area (3) of the actuating device. The present invention makes it possible to embody a robust additional switching element, which is protected from disturbances, at an actuating element. Mobile and hence susceptible cablings to the additional switching element, which were hitherto necessary, are eliminated.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 15, 2006Publication date: November 20, 2008Inventors: Andreas Giefer, Jorg Meyer

Publication number: 20080282830Abstract: A bicycle component actuating device is provided with a base member, a first user operating member, a locking member and a second user operating member. The first user operating member rotates between first and second operating positions about a rotational axis in a first operating plane that intersects with the rotational axis. The locking member is moves between a locking position to lock the first user operating member in the second operating position and a releasing position to release the first operating member from the second operating position. The second user operating member moves from a non-releasing position to a releasing position for releasing the first user operating member. One of the locking member and the second user operating member is movably along an operating path that intersects with the first operating plane of the first user operating member.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 16, 2007Publication date: November 20, 2008Applicant: Shimano Inc.Inventor: Nobukatsu HARA

Publication number: 20080282831Abstract: A manually powered teleoperable electromechanical device is disclosed. The user's movement of the joints on a master mechanism is converted to electrical energy to control a kinematically similar arrangement of joints on a slave mechanism. Bi-directional, dynamic, force reflecting control of the slave mechanism is provided without a need for sensors, software, computers, or external power sources.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 16, 2007Publication date: November 20, 2008Inventor: Daniel Steven Sanchez

Publication number: 20080282832Abstract: A tilt steering apparatus comprises a tilt adjusting mechanism in which a tilt lock release is established only when an oscillation-free end of an operating arm portion of a tilt operating lever is positioned toward a steering wheel side. Even when the tilt operating lever is oscillated to the steering wheel side, the tilt operating lever is prevented from returning under its own weight, thereby preventing it from being difficult to operate. The tilt steering apparatus is configured from an oscillation latch portion formed on the circumference of an oscillation center portion of an oscillation base portion of the tilt operating lever to move reciprocally in the circumferential direction, a hook portion formed in the movable bracket, and a spring that extends between the oscillation latch portion and the hook portion elastically urged in the direction of contraction. The centerline of the spring is able to pass through the oscillation center portion of the tilt operating lever as appropriate.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 3, 2008Publication date: November 20, 2008Applicant: YAMADA MANUFACTURING CO., LTD.Inventors: Naoki Shimoyama, Tohru Ohta, Kazunari Machida
