Abstract: The invention provides a method of spatial scalable compression of video stream. The video stream is a stream having a resolution higher than a specified resolution. Firstly, the video stream is down-sampled and encoded to obtain a base stream; then the base stream is decoded and up-sampled to obtain a reconstructed stream; the reconstructed stream is subtracted from the video stream to obtain a residual stream; and next, a gain value is obtained according to an expected bitrate; in the end, the gain value is multiplied by the residual stream, the result obtained thereby is encoded to obtain an enhancement stream. The invention can not only determine the gain value according to the video stream itself, but also adjust the gain value dynamically according to external application environments, thus enabling the bitrate of the enhancement stream to meet the actual demand always.

Abstract: Today's video codecs require the intelligent choice between many coding options. This choice can efficiently be done using Lagrangian coder control. But Lagrangian coder control only provides results given a particular Lagrange parameter, which correspond to some unknown transmission rate. On the other hand, rate control algorithms provide coding results at a given bitrate but without the optimization performance of Lagrangian coder control. The combination of rate control and Lagrangian optimization for hybrid video coding is investigated. A new approach is suggested to incorporate these two known methods into the video coder control using macroblock mode decision and quantizer adaptation. The rate-distortion performance of the proposed approach is validated and analyzed via experimental results.

Abstract: This disclosure describes techniques for encoding data to compress image data to a reduced size. The techniques may be particularly effective in transcoding an image to a reduced size for transmission. An encoding device may transcode an image to an acceptable file size using bitrate control techniques that affect the entire image uniformly to transcode the image. For example, the encoding device may modify one or more quantization tables as a function of the near linear relationship between bitrate (R) and the number of zero-valued quantized transform coefficients to reduce the file size uniformly over the entire image. Alternatively, or additionally, the encoding device may transcode the image using bitrate control techniques that affect only specific localized regions of the image.

Abstract: Detection of errors in a video stream occurs by calculating an error detection code, such as a Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) code over a group of not more than N macroblocks in a slice of the stream prior and after transmission, where N is an integer greater than zero but less than the total number of macroblocks in the slice. A comparison of the error detection codes reveals whether any errors exist in the group of macroblocks. If the group has no errors, normal decoding occurs. If the macroblock group has an error, then the macroblock group, and the remaining blocks in the slice undergo error concealment.

Abstract: A source sends an encoded data block during a first time interval to a destination and to a relay. The source sends additional parity bits for the encoded data block during a second time interval. The relay partially decodes that encoded data block to a process-defined end point (typically only a partial decoding), such as a fixed number of decoding iterations. After partial decoding the relay forms a modified data block having corrected information bits and the parity bits of the block it received, and sends the modified data block to the destination, during the second time interval. The destination decodes to a results-defined end point the modified data block it received from the relay using the additional parity bits it received from the source. If that end-point cannot be reached, the destination may begin anew decoding the original encoded data block it received from the source.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for improving the utilization of air link resources in a wireless communications system, e.g., an OFDM MIMO system, including a base station with multiple transmit antennas are described. Superposition signaling in the downlink is employed. The superimposed signal includes a first transform result signal and a second lower power signal. The first transform result signal is generated from a first signal, which uses position modulation, e.g., including null components and high power non-null components. Different components of the first transform result signal are directed to different transmit antennas. The first transform result signal communicates information to a first wireless terminal, e.g., a weak receiver. The non-null received elements of the first transform result signal are utilized by a second wireless terminal, e.g., a superior receiver, as pilots to determine a channel estimate.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus (300) for generating corrected quadrature phase signal pairs in a communication device are provided. The apparatus (300) includes a quadrature phase generator (310), programmable delay elements (320, 330) and a control circuit (360). The programmable delay elements (320, 330) receive a quadrature phase signal pair (signals I 312 and Q 314) from the quadrature phase generator (310). The control circuit (360) generates a control signal (362) based on outputs (325, 335) of the programmable delay elements (320, 330). The control signal (362) configures the programmable delay elements (320, 330). The programmable delay elements (320, 330) are configured to adjust delay between the signals I (312) and Q (314). The programmable delay elements (320, 330) are also used to adjust duty cycle for the quadrature phase signal pair to provide the corrected quadrature phase signal pair.

In a transmitting end, the method holds (determines) control information for specifying an insertion position and an insertion amount to insert a redundant signal known to the receiving apparatus into an information data sequence, generates a coded signal sequence by encoding an information data sequence, generates a transmission signal by inserting the redundant signal into the coded signal sequence based on the held control information, and transmits the generated transmission signal.
