Abstract: Certain novel formulations of plant growth media additives that act in such a manner as to permit proper amounts of moisture to contact root systems in order to reduce hydrophobicity within said media. The inventive formulation comprising multi-branched surfactant compounds with both hydrophobic and hydrophilic constituents within each branch attached to a polyfunctional base compound permit effective moisture penetration through plant growth media for sustained seedling and plant growth therein. Such multi-branched wetting agents provide sustained moisture penetration over a sustained period of time, since the individual branches of such compounds may become dissociated from its base polyfunctional compound. Since such branches include both hydrophobic and hydrophilic constituents themselves, and thus act as wetting agents, even after degradation of the initial surfactant compound, repeated wetting and moisture penetration, at least, are permitted.

Abstract: One aspect of the present invention concerns scanning acoustic microscopes in which sound waves used for imaging purposes are generated by an opto-acoustical process. A scanning acoustic microscope of the present invention includes an opto-acoustic transducer assembly having a substrate. Formed on or in the substrate of the opto-acoustic transducer assembly is a layer of opto-acoustic material. When pulsed light waves impinge the layer of opto-acoustic material, pulsed sound waves are created. An acoustic lens also formed in the substrate focuses the pulsed sound waves which are then used to probe the physical and mechanical properties of a sample object. Pulsed sound waves reflecting off the sample object return to the opto-acoustic transducer where the pulsed sound waves impinge the layer of opto-acoustic material. The impinging sound waves change at least one optical property of the layer of opto-acoustic material.

Abstract: Certain embodiments of the present invention provide a system and method for predicting long-term exposure to a hazardous environment based on a user-controllable measurement interval of short duration. In an embodiment, the system includes an electronic circuit for receiving one or more signals representative of the level of a hazard in an environment using one or more of a hazard level sensor and a direct input jack. The system further includes a processor within the electronic circuit for determining an accumulated dose over a user-controllable measurement interval. In addition, the processor predicts hazardous exposure for a user-settable extended period greater than the user-controllable measurement interval and based on the accumulated dose. The dosimeter also includes a user-operable switch within the electronic circuit and in communication with the processor for controlling the user-controllable measurement interval to be less than a nominal measurement interval.

Abstract: The pressure differential metering device of the present invention is generally deployed as a flow restrictor placed in the valve inlet so it will create a desired differential pressure to signal a pilot valve, for example, that drives the main valve to limit the flow rate through the valve. The pressure differential metering device of the present invention is deployed across the valve inlet port, with its central axis perpendicular to the direction of fluid flow. The flow restriction element of the present invention may be configured in a variety of sizes to create a desired restrictive cross section to the flow, thereby creating the required differential pressure signals for the valve instrumentation and control. The flow restriction element is configured with upstream and downstream apertures that are the openings to passageways to the corresponding upstream and downstream end-ports. The end-ports provide connection arrangements for the control system of the main valve instrumentation.

Abstract: The inventions relates to a torsion and/or tension and/or pressure textile sensor. The textile sensor is a resistive-type sensor consisting of: at least one base layer of fabric (1) comprising any composition and/or mixture and produced using any technique; optionally a surface treatment (2) in order to render the surface of the fabric (1) more uniform; a single conductive layer (3) having tracks distributed geometrically such as to define areas (31) sensitive to stresses from conductive fluids and an encapsulation and protective layer (4) on the conductive layer (3); optionally an upper fabric layer (5); and at least one signal converter (7) which is connected to the tracks, such that when one of the above-mentioned areas (31) is subjected to pressure, tensions or torsion a large variation in the resistance of said track is produced, which can be detected by the converter (7).

Abstract: In a micromechanical sensor (11) for measuring a mass flow rate in accordance with the Coriolis principle, two line sections (13) are mounted in a suspension means (24) such that they can oscillate, as a result of which they can be caused to oscillate in phase opposition (essential for the measuring principle). A spacer layer (18) is provided between the layers (12a, 12b) forming the line sections (13), the spacer layer ensuring that there is a space between the line sections (13) in the quiescent state. Oscillation of the line sections in phase opposition only becomes possible at all as a result of this since this prevents collision of the line sections (13) as they approach one another.

Abstract: Tactile sensors are disclosed that mimic the human fingertip and its touch receptors. The mechanical components are similar to a fingertip, with a rigid core surrounded by a weakly conductive fluid contained within an elastomeric skin. The deformable properties of the finger pad can be used as part of a transduction process. Multiple electrodes can be mounted on the surface of the rigid core and connected to impedance measuring circuitry within the core. External forces deform the fluid path around the electrodes, resulting in a distributed pattern of impedance changes containing information about those forces and the objects that applied them. Strategies are described for extracting features related to the mechanical inputs and using this information for reflexive grip control. Controlling grip force in a prosthetic having sensory feedback information is described. Techniques are described for enhancing the useful force range for impedance sensors by internally texturing the elastomeric skin.

Abstract: A personal nanoparticle sampler is disclosed to include a pre-classifier, a nozzle, a particle-sizing filter pack and a final filter pack. The particle-sizing filter pack and the final filter pack respectively accommodate a particle-sizing filter and a final filter to collect nanoparticles smaller than a diameter. The pre-classifier removes large particles to avoid clogging of the particle-sizing filter pack. The nozzle raises the airflow velocity to reduce the cut-off diameter of the particle-sizing filter without increasing the total flowrate, allowing the personal nanoparticle sampler to be used with a personal sampling pump.
