Abstract: The silo safety system implements safety logic for silo opening gates by utilizing light sensors connected to a programmable logic controller or equivalent configuration of relay contact switches. Photodetection sensors and their associated light transmitters are placed on opposing lateral sides along a truck passageway under the silos where the tail, middle, and front of a truck are presupposed to be. When a truck pulls under the silos, system logic uses the resultant pattern of beam breaks to prevent the silo gates from opening unless the truck cab is clear from the silo that the truck is supposed to be under. For two or more silos, the system enables only the correct silo, while the other silos are disabled. The silo that the truck is under can then only be energized by the silo control operator. The control logic can have a default configuration for a predetermined truck size.

Powered tines load a log onto a vertically adjustable log deck, the deck including powered mechanisms for turning and securing the log in the desired orientation for cutting. Cuts are made by a horizontally traveling band saw. The saw has no vertical adjustment. Board thickness is determined by the height of the vertically adjustable log deck. Cut boards are removed by a board sweep that pushes the board laterally from the top of the log onto a tray. The saw travels along the tray to push the board longitudinally onto a suitable platform for transport. All of the above mechanisms are controlled hydraulically from a single operator station on the mill, thus freeing the operator from many manual tasks and increasing production.

In one embodiment, the artificially aging step includes aging the aluminum alloy at a temperature of at least about 250° F., and final aging the aluminum alloy at a temperature of not greater than about 225° F. and for at least about 20 hours. These aluminum alloys realize an improved combination of properties, including improved strength with at least equivalent fatigue crack growth resistance.
