Abstract: An apparatus and method for enhancing the security of a cluster box unit which includes a protective enclosure, internal cabinetry, door, hinge and locking system. The cluster box unit may also include outgoing mail compartment doors that are heavily constructed and rigidly reinforced, with the locks carried thereon protectively shielded, and with the extensible bolts of these locks being engaged by brackets that not only lock the outgoing mail compartment doors but also the master loading doors of the cluster box units. The cluster box unit may also include master loading doors are provided with hinges that extend the full height of the doors—hinges that are defined by pivotally interlining elements of extrusions that very sturdily mount the master loading doors, that prevent prying or bending the doors in the vicinities of their hinges.

Abstract: A system for preventing unauthorized use of a vehicle having an engine housing and a device for enabling starting of the engine amongst other ancillary features is disclosed. The system provides a wireless smart card reader and a smart card which, may be a multi-function smart card for use with the reader. A circuit is provided in the system which disables operation of the vehicle. The circuit is integrated for electrical disablement by the smart card reader. The circuit is positioned directly within the engine housing in order to prevent tampering or any other activity which would render the circuit inoperative or bypassed. As a further feature, the system, provide access to a building and the building can communicate with the wireless card reader associated with a vehicle to effect operation of the vehicle. A method of use accompanies the apparatus.

Abstract: The subject invention provides a means of automatically detecting and recording a person's use of magazines, i.e. printed media exposure, for the purpose of market research. The present invention comprises one or more electrically conductive marker regions applied to certain specific locations on one or more magazine pages. In one general embodiment, the presence and relative separation of the marker regions are detected by a capacitive sensors and electronic device that stores, processes and communicates the data wirelessly to an external device. In another embodiment, a passive chip less tag is used to indirectly measure the change in conductivity of the conductive regions caused by prolonged exposure to air or light. Exemplary methods are described for acquiring readership and exposure data using the present invention.

The map distance calculator includes a double logarithmic scale that can be moved relative to the linear scale to easily calibrate the calculator 40 to a scaled map. The linear scale is printed on a substantially planar base member in the form of a rectangular sleeve member. A first part of the double logarithmic scale is printed on a sliding member that is slidably coupled to the sleeve member. The sleeve member is formed with an elongate window in its upper face extending adjacent to and parallel with the linear scale. A second part of the double logarithmic scale is printed along an edge of the window. The map distance calculator can be used on a map with a unique scale and subsequently used to directly read off the actual distance.
