Publication number: 20110179640Abstract: Embodiments of the invention relate to a method and system for magnetic self-assembly (MSA) of one or more parts to another part. Assembly occurs when the parts having magnet patterns bond to one another. Such bonding can result in energy minima The magnetic forces and torques—controlled by the size, shape, material, and magnetization direction of the magnetic patterns cause the components to rotate and align. Specific embodiments of MSA can offer self-assembly features such as angular orientation, where assembly is restricted to one physical orientation; inter-part bonding allowing assembly of free-floating components to one another; assembly of free-floating components to a substrate; and bonding specificity, where assembly is restricted to one type of component when multiple components may be present.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 25, 2010Publication date: July 28, 2011Applicant: UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA RESEARCH FOUNDATION, INC.Inventors: David Patrick Arnold, Sheetal Bhalchandra Shetye

Publication number: 20110179644Abstract: To protect the bearings, lubricant and seals of a refrigerant compressor, the compressor includes one or more inductors for mitigating a high frequency common mode current that produces a high frequency shaft voltage. Each inductor is a ring of magnetic material encircling three insulated cables that convey three-phase power from an adjustable frequency drive to the compressor's motor. Without the inductors, the high frequency shaft voltage can become damagingly high due to the length of a cast iron housing that can be particularly long if the housing contains both a motor and several centrifugal impellers. The high frequency shaft voltage is just one component of a composite adverse shaft voltage. Another component, known as an operationally induced shaft voltage, can be reduced by a grounding contact, so instead of using just an inductor or just a contact, both can be used to provide a total solution to the problem.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 4, 2011Publication date: July 28, 2011Inventors: Robert M. The device is temporarily affixed to a hanger by looping the device over the top hook part of a clothing hanger then conjoining an article of clothing on that same hanger. Once the device and article of clothing are conjoined in the hanging position, the device labels the article of clothing as a condition or state of use determined by device markings or user options. The device allows the user to mark clothing in categories such as worn or unworn, used or new, size, or could identify the status of an infinite number of clothes hung by sections on as many hangers with one device serving as the label for all articles of clothing in that section.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 25, 2007Publication date: July 28, 2011Inventor: Jennifer Beth Lamers

Publication number: 20110179682Abstract: A flowing sand picture flowing sand picture includes a transparent, flat box-like picture frame holding therein a fluid, multiple heavy granular materials and multiple lightweight granular materials. Each heavy granular material has a specific gravity higher than the fluid and each lightweight granular material has a specific gravity lower than the fluid. When the transparent, flat box-like picture frame is turned upside down, the granular materials float up and down through one another, showing a picture of dynamic variation.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 25, 2010Publication date: July 28, 2011Inventor: CHENG-HSIUNG LIN

Publication number: 20110179683Abstract: A concept for reducing the distance between LED lamps and illuminated surface to produce high-brightness signs is disclosed. Currently, most electric-signs place LED modules at the cabinet enclosure base. Since enclosures are deep, surface illumination from LEDs drops significantly. LEDs are therefore driven at high currents for adequate brightness, degrading their lifetime. This invention reduces the gap G between LEDs and the sign-face, increasing surface illumination exponentially. Another benefit: light forwarded from LEDs produces no heat! No frontal thermal management is needed and a small G suffices. However, LEDs produce heat at the back, requiring thermal management. By placing LEDs closer to the sign-face, the distance increases between LEDs and the base, allowing for air flow and heat-sinking room. The proposed method increases LED-module density by overlapping two modules on a grid-node; these modules are mutually orthogonal, while both are orthogonal to the surface-normal.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 28, 2010Publication date: July 28, 2011Inventor: Mujibun Nisa Khan

Publication number: 20110179685Abstract: An information presenting device. The device is arranged to be capable of assuming a first configuration, in which the device is flattened for transport or storage, and of assuming a second configuration, in which the device is extended and hence self-supporting. The device comprises at least two panels 4, made of a rigid material, which are joined together along the respective edges of at least two of the panels such that the device, having assumed the second configuration, forms a hollow cylinder, and at least one locking member 6, arranged between said panels 4, for continuously adjustable locking of the device in said first or second configuration, the locking member 6 comprising a first part 8a and a second part 8b, the first part 8a being slidably connected to the second part 8b and the locking member 6 being self-locking by a friction band coupling formed between contact surfaces of the first part 8a and the second part 8b of the locking member 6.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 14, 2009Publication date: July 28, 2011Inventor: Jani Mirsch
