Abstract: A new pineapple (Ananas comosus) variety of the Bromeliaceae family was developed from a cross between the parental lines ‘Dry Sweet’בHilo White’ and has been designated ‘Franklynn’. This new variety differs from its progenitors in having a higher Brix value, distinct fruit skin and flesh colors, and excellent eating quality. The plant is characterized by relatively (for pineapple) flat, spineless leaves that are green with purple coloration, and a peduncle that is partially or completely obscured by a high number of green bracts. The plant has a cylindrical and symmetrical fruit borne on a penduncle. The fruit has a lightly textured shell and flat fruitlets (eyes) with a medium sized crown. When unripe, the fruit shell is greyed-purple (RHS 187A), turning to a greyed-orange color (RHS 167B) when ripe. The fruit flesh appears cream colored and codes to a pale yellow (RHS 8D).

Abstract: A double-ended, DC-AC converter supplies AC power to a load, such as a cold cathode fluorescent lamp used to back-light a liquid crystal display. First and second converter stages generate respective first and second sinusoidal voltages having the same frequency and amplitude, but having a controlled phase difference therebetween. By employing a voltage controlled delay circuit to control the phase difference between the first and second sinusoidal voltages, the converter is able to vary the amplitude of the composite voltage differential produced across the opposite ends of the load. The converter may be either voltage fed or current fed.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for allowing users to verify the presence of personal items. RFID tags are attached to personal items, and the items are entered into a list. The user makes travel lists from the list of items. When traveling, the user queries the system to determine whether all personal items in the travel list are within range of the system. The system checks for the presence of the RFID tags associated with the items in the travel list. If any RFIDs are not present, the user is alerted. Optionally, the system updates the last known location of items whenever checking for the presence of personal items, so that if an item is not found the user can determine where the item was last known to have been.

Abstract: Disclosed are embodiments of a method and an apparatus for controlling a display mode in a portable computer. When a display mode of a liquid crystal display (LCD) is changed such as in response to a user's request, information of the changed display mode is stored being associated with a system mode. When a system is rebooted or the system mode is changed in a state in which the display mode information is stored, display mode information stored being associated with a current system mode is read, and the LCD display mode is set to an arbitrary display mode corresponding to the read display mode information. And, when a change of the LCD display mode is requested by the user, a wallpaper image for the requested display mode can be retrieved from among wallpaper images for display modes stored separately and displayed on the LCD.

Abstract: One embodiment disclosed relates to a method of fault recovery by a switch in a local area network. A link failure is detected at a port of the switch. In response to the link failure detection, a medium access control (MAC) address table of the switch is cleared. Clearing the address table causes a discovery process to fill the table to begin immediately. In addition, a link on another port of the switch may be dropped to propagate the link failure.

Abstract: A system and method for transmitting a plurality of spread-spectrum signals over a communications channel having fading. The plurality of spread-spectrum signals are radiated by a plurality of antennas, with each antenna preferably spaced by one-quarter wavelength. A plurality of receiver antennas receive the plurality of spread-spectrum signals and a plurality of fading spread-spectrum signals. Each receiver antenna is coupled to a plurality of matched filters having a respective plurality of impulse responses matched to the chip-sequence signals of the plurality of spread-spectrum signals. A RAKE and space-diversity combiner combines, for each respective chip-sequence signal, a respective plurality of detected spread-spectrum signals and a respective multiplicity of detected-multipath-spread-spectrum signals, to generate a plurality of combined signals. The symbol amplitudes can be measured and erasure decoding employed to improve performance.

The patch image and the trigger bar that are to be read by a color sensor are formed on a transfer material. Image formation is executed by a printer controller in an image forming condition set differently for the trigger bar and for the patch image.

Abstract: An electrochemical biosensor test strip with four new features. The test strip includes an indentation for tactile feel as to the location of the strips sample application port. The sample application port leads to a capillary test chamber, which includes a test reagent. The wet reagent includes from about 0.2% by weight to about 2% by weight polyethylene oxide from about 100 kilodaltons to about 900 kilodaltons mean molecular weight, which makes the dried reagent more hydrophilic and sturdier to strip processing steps, such as mechanical punching, and to mechanical manipulation by the test strip user. The roof of the capillary test chamber includes a transparent or translucent window which operates as a “fill to here” line, thereby identifying when enough test sample (a liquid sample, such as blood) has been added to the test chamber to accurately perform a test. The test strip may further include a notch located at the sample application port. The notch reduces a phenomenon called “dose hesitation”.

Subsequently a sawing operation divides the lead lands into multiple leads, and the leadframe and resin material are partitioned to form packages. The pitch of the resultant leads is not limited by the pitch of the lead lands of the leadframe, so the leadframe can be of the relatively cheap generic leadframe variety, in which the pitch of the lead lands is higher than the desired pitch of the leads of the completed package. The sawing operation may further include reshaping the diepad area of the leadframe to produce heat sink fins, for improved heat dissipation. The proposed process is suitable both to produce packages including only a single integrated circuit, and also to produce multi-chip modules.

Abstract: Compositions are provided that comprise antibody against coreceptors for human immunodeficiency virus such as CCR5 and CXCR4. In particular, monoclonal human antibodies against human CCR5 are provided that bind to CCR5 with high affinity and are capable of inhibiting HIV infection at low concentrations. The antibodies can be used as prophylactics or therapeutics to prevent and treat HIV infection, for screening drugs, and for diagnosing diseases or conditions associated with interactions with HIV coreceptors.

Abstract: A method of distributing particles in a flow of gas and a needleless syringe for use in the needleless injection of particles into the skin or mucosa of a vertebrate subject are disclosed. The syringe includes a convergence which reduces pressure of the gas flowing in the gas flow path due to the Venturi effect such that particles initially located outside of the gas flow path are drawn into the gas flow path under the action of the reduced pressure and become entrained in the gas. An exit nozzle accelerates the particles so entrained. In another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of creating a gas flow in a needleless syringe which comprises flowing gas through a first convergence into a chamber to form a transsonic gas jet in the chamber and passing the gas jet from the chamber into a second convergence and along the nozzle.
