Abstract: Energy efficiencies are achieved in a dryer or washer/dryer by selectively varying temperature ranges, time periods, heater power levels, and air flow rates. Efficiency improvements on the order of 16% were obtained over typical constant power, constant temperature, timed drying cycles by varying one or more of these parameters. Efficiencies can also be improved by drawing air from alternative warm sources such as an attic or warm external environment, or by heat recovery from dryer exhaust passages.

Abstract: A situation where sulfur compounds originating from a castable are mixed into synthesis gas produced by way of a reforming reaction and the mixed sulfur compounds are separated and collected with carbon dioxide and further fed into a reformer to thereby degrade the reforming catalyst of the reformer by sulfur poisoning is avoided. Purge gas that is steam or steam-containing gas is made to flow into the piping to be used for a synthesis gas production apparatus and dried out to remove the sulfur compounds contained in the castable prior to the start-up of operation of the synthesis gas production apparatus, in order to prevent the sulfur compounds from being released by hot synthesis gas.

Abstract: An article of footwear includes a tongue. The tongue includes a top layer and a bottom layer. The top layer is attached to a portion of an upper. The bottom layer is attached to the top layer at a distance that is staggered from where the top layer is attached to the upper. An intermediate layer of cushioning material is optionally provided between the top layer and the bottom layer. Alternatively, the top layer of the tongue is formed integrally from the material of a portion of the upper. The bottom layer is attached to the top layer with the optional intermediate layer of cushioning material disposed in between. The staggered attachment of the top and bottom layers of the tongue provides a smooth surface in contact with a foot of a wearer on the inside of the article of footwear and presents a stitchless visible tongue to the wearer on the outside of the article of footwear.

Abstract: An athletic shoe includes an outsole, a midsole, an insole, a bootie, a cage surrounding the upper front of the bootie, a tongue, a quarter, a heel counter and wings. The bootie can have one, two, three, four or five individual toe sections which allow the toes of the foot to move independently. The bootie may be removable or adhesively attached to the midsole and the innersole. Both the midsole and the innersole can have slots cut between the toe portions which further allows for independent movement of the toes. The cage and outsole surround the front toe portions of the bootie, insole and midsole. The cage and outsole prevent all large particles from falling between the toes. The individual toe sections in the inventive shoe increase natural foot movement, haptic response and improve stability/balance, footstrike biomechanics and foot strength.

Abstract: A protective cover fits over the top of a hockey skate boot. The cover has a vertically-split heel that is contiguous with an open bottom, and includes enough flexibility and tension that the cover can be flexed open diagonally from the split heel to fit over the top of the hockey skate boot, and then released to substantially conform to the instep, sides, ankles, and a portion of the heel in a tensioned fit. The preferred material for the cover is a high grade polycarbonate. The high grade polycarbonate is advantageous over other materials known in the art of covers based on the specific strength, impact resistance and elongation characteristics of high grade polycarbonates. The temperature ranges that the cover may be used in vary significantly and the high grade polycarbonate provides for optimal protection and performance in the wide temperature ranges.
