  • Publication number: 20130028733
Abstract: A wind turbine blade is configured such that the lift force from the blade airfoil is always normal, or nearly normal, to the shaft torque. This condition maximizes energy conversion. This objective may be achieved by a) having the airfoil chord always aligned to the actual wind direction (subject only to small angle of attack variations), and b) slowing the turbine rotation rate so that no blade twist is needed. As a result, blade tip speed due to shaft rotation is less than the wind speed, and preferably much less. This low tip speed eliminates any hazard to birds. The lift force from the blade airfoil directly drives the torque on the shaft, so the control problem simplifies to adjusting the blade angle of attack to keep the lift constant across varying wind speeds.

Abstract: A cooled component for a gas turbine engine, for example a turbine rotor blade, is provided. The component has an internal cooling flow passage. Cooling air is passed through the internal cooling flow passage to remove heat from the component and thereby reduce its temperature. The cooling air is bled from the internal cooling passage after it has passed through a portion of the passage into an internal bleed flow passage. This bled air is then used in a seal. Thus, some of the cooling air that enters the internal cooling flow passage is used both to cool the component and to form a seal, for example with another component.

Abstract: A gear pump has a pair of meshed gears for rotating within a gear pump chamber, and a motor driving at least one of the gears. A discharge line passes fluid downstream from the gear pump chamber, and a suction line delivers fluid into the gear pump chamber. A bypass valve communicates with the discharge line. A shutoff valve communicates with the discharge line. The bypass valve opens at a lower pressure than the shutoff valve. A bypass line communicating the discharge line to the suction line when the bypass valve is open. The gear pump is configured to compress air. In addition, a gear pump arrangement that can be mounted in either of two attitudes is described, as is a method of operating a gear pump.

Abstract: Assemblies and methods for a booster pump used in a pool cleaning/filtration system are provided. An exemplary booster pump assembly is adapted to increase the water pressure of water flow for use in a pool cleaning system. The booster pump includes a front housing defining a substantially circular geometry having an inlet positioned substantially in the center of the front housing and extending axially outward with respect to the front housing. The booster pump also includes an outlet extending substantially laterally with respect to the front housing. The front housing and the rear housing form an enclosure for positioning of an impeller. The inlet and the outlet are each coupled to conduits having substantially similar flow diameters, and the water passing through the outlet at an increased water pressure is sufficient to make operable a positive pressure pool cleaner. Advantageous support structures and drain plug configurations are also provided.
