Publication number: 20130037479Abstract: It is an object of the present invention to provide a hollow fiber forward osmosis membrane, which can enhance forward osmotic pressure energy acquired by permeation, and thus improve power generation efficiency in the forward osmotic pressure power generation, when dilution water such as freshwater permeates into seawater through the osmosis membrane. The relationship between optimal conditions for an inner diameter d and a length L of the hollow fiber osmosis membrane to be used for forward osmotic pressure power generation whereby dilution water such as fresh water is caused to permeate into non-concentrate seawater through the hollow fiber osmosis membrane to increase a flow rate on the side of the seawater using forward osmotic pressure energy thus generated, and power is generated using the increased flow rate, is expressed as equation (1) in the range of d=50 to 200 ?m, L=0.5 to 2 m and J=1.7×10?7 to 5.1×10?7 m/sec, [Equation 11] d L 0.75 + J 0.5 = 1.0 × 10 5 ? 1.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 24, 2011Publication date: February 14, 2013Applicant: KYOWAKIDEN INDUSTRY CO., LTDInventors: Hidechito Hayashi, Tetsuya Okumura, Hideyuki Sakai, Morihiro Irie

Publication number: 20130037484Abstract: This disclosure examines using alginate lyase to catalytically degrade alginate in order to decrease affinity and fouling potential to membranes of 0.2 and 0.02 ?m pore size, respectively within a process line of a filtration system. Enzymatically treated alginate caused less fouling on both ultrafiltration and microfiltration membranes than original alginate. Enzymatically treated alginate is predicted to cause less fouling on both membranes within the pH range of approximately 3.0 to approximately 10.0. Without the presence of calcium cation, alginate lyase reduced the foulant resistance by more than 82% for both membranes. In the presence of 1 mM calcium cation, alginate lyase reduced the foulant resistance by more than 55%. In addition, the foulant structure composed of enzymatically treated alginate was more readily removed by backwashing, suggesting reversible fouling. The advantages of using enzymatic technique to control membrane fouling include high efficiency and no damage to the membrane materials.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 19, 2012Publication date: February 14, 2013Applicant: Purdue Research FoundationInventor: Dong Chen

Publication number: 20130037489Abstract: The present invention is a gravity continuously operating filtration system for separating impurities from liquids. The liquid flows upward through a bed of filter media in a vessel and filtered liquid (filtrate) is collected above the top of the bed. Dirtied filter media are withdrawn from the bottom of the vessel and returned to the vessel from the top. The dirtied filter media are first conveyed to a separation device by which the bulk of solids are separated from the filter media. The reject liquid from the separation device is discharged as waste. The filter media are then cleaned in a spiral wash path and are then returned back to the system. The described cleaning process is far more effective than other similar filtration systems. Majority of essential components are located outside of the vessel and are convenient to access for maintenance and inspection.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2012Publication date: February 14, 2013Inventor: Hua Jiang
