  • Patent number: 8650910
Abstract: The present invention is directed toward a method of reducing contamination of a glass melt in a stirring apparatus by an oxide material. The oxide material, such as platinum oxide, may be volatilized by the high temperature of the glass melt, and then condense on the inside surfaces of a stirring vessel, particularly the stirrer shaft and surrounding surfaces of the stirring vessel cover. A build-up of condensed oxide material may then be dislodged and fall back into the glass melt. Accordingly, an apparatus and method is provided that includes a heating element disposed adjacent an annular gap between the stirring vessel cover and the stirrer shaft. The heating element heats a surface of the stirring vessel cover bounding the annular gap and prevents condensation of volatile oxides that may flow through the annular gap.

  • Patent number: 8650916
Abstract: Flat knitting allows production of textile structures (e.g., for use in footwear uppers) of a final desired shape such that textile cutting steps can be avoided. Flat knitted elements also can be formed directly in desired three dimensional shapes, which can help avoid the need to use additional support structures (e.g., in footwear construction). By selectively placing multiple different yarns and/or stitch patterns at multiple different locations in the overall structure during the knitting process, flat knitted products may have multiple different physical properties (e.g., different stretchability, different moisture management capabilities, etc.) at multiple different locations or zones within a single, unitary construction (e.g., different properties at different zones or locations within a single footwear structure). Additionally, flat knitting can be used to produce pockets, tunnels, or other layered structures in the final product.

Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for a milk measuring device for measuring the acoustic properties, such as acoustic damping and sound velocity in milk, in order to determine milk properties. The sound velocity in milk depends on temperature and composition. By carrying out, for example by means of a piezo element, a reference measurement on vibrations that have been directed by a second piezo element into a wire or the like of known material, which wire is strung in the measuring chamber which is filled with the milk to be tested, the milk temperature can be derived, so that other milk properties, in particular the fat/protein composition, can be determined in a more reliable manner.

  • Patent number: 8650940
Abstract: A master component is provided for use in checking for any variation in the performance of a gas turbine test facility. The master component replaces a standard component, which is typically a turbine blade, vane or segment in the test facility. The master component is attached to the test facility in the same manner as the standard component. The flow rate through the master component is substantially the same as the flow rate through the standard component for a given inlet and outlet temperature and pressure. The flow through the master component is simpler than the flow through the standard component. This means that the flow through the master component is less likely to vary over time. As such, the master component is more suitable for use in checking for any variation in the performance of a test facility.

  • Patent number: 8650943
Abstract: An air-fuel ratio imbalance among cylinders determining apparatus according to the present invention is applied to a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine in which a compression ratio is variable. The determining apparatus obtains, using at least an output value of an upstream air-fuel ratio sensor disposed for a catalyst, an “imbalance determining parameter” which becomes larger as a degree of an imbalance among “individual cylinder air-fuel ratios” becomes larger, each of the individual cylinder air-fuel ratios being an air-fuel ratio of a mixture supplied to each of cylinders. Further, the determining apparatus determines that an air-fuel ratio imbalance state among cylinders is occurring, when the imbalance determining parameter is larger than a predetermined threshold. The determining apparatus changes the predetermined threshold in accordance with a mechanical compression ratio of the engine.

Abstract: A thermal flow sensor is responsive only to a modulated component of the flow. At zero flow the modulated component disappears, except for an artifact caused by motion of the modulator. This artifact is minimized by reducing the extent of modulator motion and by sampling the modulated signal at a quiescent part of the modulator's operating cycle. This results in a thermal flow sensor with a very stable zero.

  • Patent number: 8650947
Abstract: Provided is a compact apparatus for measuring the flow rate of a fluid. The apparatus includes a heated measure element and a heated reference element which are in substantially the same thermal environment within a measure cell, except that the measure element is situated in the path of the cooling fluid flow and the reference element is sheltered from this direct fluid flow. These elements are arranged as parallel and concentric planar elements that are essentially identical to each other with matching thermal characteristics. The elements are electrically connected in a Wheatstone bridge arrangement. Thermal exchange between the reference and measure elements is used to optimise noise rejection due to common mode background thermal effects. Measured parameters from the bridge can be used to derive the fluid flow rate.
