Abstract: A metal detector (20) has a metallic enclosure (21) with entrance and exit apertures (30, 31). A coil system inside the enclosure has an energized transmitter coil. First and second receiver coils (24, 25) bound a detection zone (28) between the apertures, through which inspected objects (2) travel. The receiver coils are on opposite sides of the transmitter coil, with regard to the direction of travel. The receiver coils are connected in series, but their windings are wires oppositely in a rotational sense. Metal contamination in the object generates a detection signal in the receiver coils. A first and second cancelling means (26), arranged at the entrance and exit, cancel the undesirable influence of metal contamination beyond a first distance upstream of and a second distance downstream of the coil system. The respective cancelling means differ from each other and, consequently, the first and second distances are different.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus for determining whether an accessory includes particular circuitry. A host device may measure a first voltage and a second voltage received from an accessory, where the voltages are provide through the accessory from a power source. Before measuring the second voltage, the host device may send an instruction to the accessory instructing the accessory to alter an impedance of the power path between the power source and the host device, and the host device may draw at least a threshold amount of current from the power source via the accessory. The host device may then determine whether the accessory includes particular circuitry based on the relationship between the first voltage and the second voltage.

The estimated charge state of a battery comprising a plurality of series connected cells is updated using Coulomb counting during battery operation, for example, while operating an electric vehicle motor. The estimated charge state may be coupled to a fuel gauge. When the battery is in a no load state, a no load voltage measurement is made. Abstract: A condition estimation device for estimating condition of an electric storage device includes a voltage detector and a controller. The voltage detector is configured to detect a voltage of the electric storage device. The controller is configured to perform a distinctive point detection process to detect a distinctive point based on the voltage detected by the voltage detector, and an estimation process to estimate the condition of the electric storage device based on the distinctive point detected in the distinctive point detection process. The distinctive point is a point at which a variation in voltage per unit remaining capacity or per unit time of the electric storage device during charge or discharge is a local maximum value.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for conducting a test cycle for an electrometer of an environmental radiation monitor by current injection is provided. The environmental radiation monitor includes a high pressure ionization chamber, a power supply electrically connected to the high pressure ionization chamber, and an electrometer electrically connected to the high pressure ionization chamber. A controller controls the power supply voltage signal provided to the high pressure ionization chamber to create a constant current to be injected into the electrometer. The methods include varying the voltage signal provided to the high pressure ionization chamber, measuring a current signal, processing the current signal with the electrometer and comparing the voltage signal to an expected result, indicating proper operation of the electrometer. Further examples of the method include initiating and discontinuing a test function.

Abstract: A capacitor component is adapted for capacitive coupling to an electrical power apparatus in which a PD is suspected, such as a shielded power cable; and an impedance transformance device has an input side connected directly to the capacitor component. Together the two components are used as a sensor to pick up and convey PD signals to a PD signal-analyzing system. Although the two components inherently form a classic high-pass RC filter, in accordance with the invention the input impedance at the capacitor side is much greater than the output impedance at the signal-analyzing system side. The effect is to pass much more of the lower frequency components of the PD signal for analysis by the PD signal-analyzing system than if the tranformance device were not included.
