Securolide is cytoselective for mutants of hRad9 based on studies conducted in Rad9 mutant yeast strains. Securolide appears to interact with mutant hRad9 in cancer cells to produce DNA lesions which result in apoptosis. Studies have demonstrated that Securolide is useful for treating proliferation disorders such as melanoma, leukemia, breast cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, esophagus cancer, liver cancer, and lymphatic cancer, and to alleviate pain associated with the cancer.

    Abstract: A system and method for the conversion of free fatty acids to glycerides and the subsequent conversion of glycerides to glycerin and biodiesel includes the transesterification of a glyceride stream with an alcohol. The fatty acid alkyl esters are separated from the glycerin to produce a first liquid phase containing a fatty acid alkyl ester rich (concentrated) stream and a second liquid phase containing a glycerin rich (concentrated) stream. The fatty acid alkyl ester rich stream is then subjected to distillation, preferably reactive distillation, wherein the stream undergoes both physical separation and chemical reaction. The fatty acid alkyl ester rich stream is then purified to produce a purified biodiesel product and a glyceride rich residue stream. Neutralization of the alkaline stream, formed during the alkali-catalyzed transesterfication process, may proceed by the addition of a mineral or an organic acid.

In some embodiments, a 3D porous metal-organic framework may be based on a trinodal (3,3,4) net of zyg topology by the self-assembly of the nonlinear hexacarboxylate (BHB) with the paddle-wheel Cu2(COO)4 cluster. Although its porosity and surface area are moderate, the open copper sites and optimal pore spaces enable the pore spaces to be fully utilized for methane storage, resulting in a high methane storage density and high absolute volumetric methane storage at room temperature and 35 bar. By the immobilization of high density open metal sites and the deliberate control of the pore space for their efficient methane storage, this porous MOF functions as an efficient media for methane and natural gas storage.

    Abstract: The use of quaternary halogenated ammonium salts for treating leishmaniasis infections and other parasitic diseases is described. Although there have been previous reports in which quaternary ammonium salts are used as antimalarial, antifungal, and antileishmanial compounds, the use of such salts containing a halogenated N-methyl substituent as a therapeutic agent against leishmaniasis had not been reported. The compounds described here, in specific those with a terminal arylalkenyl or diarylalkenyl moiety, are shown to inhibit the growth of Leishmania panamensis parasites, a known causative agent of leishmaniasis disease. In addition, the series of compounds are also extensive against malaria, Chagas disease, toxoplasmosis, and other parasitic diseases.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a method for purifying chlorinated hydrocarbon(s), comprising cooling a mixture containing hydrogen fluoride and at least one chlorinated hydrocarbon selected from the group consisting of 2-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene, 2,3-dichloro-3,3-difluoropropene, 1,2,3-trichloro-1,1-difluoropropane, and 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane to cause liquid-liquid separation of the mixture into an upper liquid phase having a high hydrogen fluoride concentration and a lower liquid phase having a high chlorinated hydrocarbon concentration, and a method for purifying a chlorinated hydrocarbon, comprising subjecting the lower liquid phase obtained by the liquid-liquid separation to a distillation operation. According to the present invention, a chlorinated hydrocarbon can be purified by separating and removing hydrogen fluoride from a chlorinated hydrocarbon-hydrogen fluoride mixture under simple and economically advantageous conditions.

    Abstract: A method for high-dose Grid radiotherapy utilizing a three-dimensional (3D) dose lattice formation is described herein. The 3D dose lattice can be achieved by, but not limited to, three technical approaches: 1) non-coplanar focused beams; 2) multileaf collimator (MLC)-based intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) or aperture-modulated arc; and 3) heavy charged particle beam. The configuration of a 3D dose lattice is comprised of the number, location, and dose of dose vertices. The optimal configuration of a 3D dose lattice can be achieved by manual calculations or by automating the calculations for a generic algorithm. The objective of the optimization algorithm is to satisfy three conditions via iteration until they reach their global minimum. With 3D dose lattice, high doses of radiation are concentrated at each lattice vertex within a tumor with drastically lower doses between vertices (peak-to-valley effect), leaving tissue outside of the tumor volume minimally exposed.
