Abstract: A system and method to perform load-balancing and congestion control between a primary Radio Access Technology (RAT) and a secondary RAT. A broadcast message is sent to all User Equipments (UEs) operating under the secondary RAT. If the primary RAT is congested, a congestion indicator in the broadcast message prevents the UEs from idle re-selecting or switching to the primary RAT. Even if the primary RAT is not congested, the broadcast message may still include other parameters such as one or more probability values, a group identifier for the UE groups, and a retention timer. The idle UEs in the secondary RAT that generate device-specific random values that are equal to or greater than the applicable probability threshold value(s) are allowed to reselect the primary RAT. If an idle UE fails this probability test, it may not be allowed to reselect the primary RAT again until the retention timer expires.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses are presented for determining a location of a mobile station. In some embodiments, a mobile station may acquire at least one attribute of a reference base station to obtain the identity of the reference base station. A first and a second locally unique attribute of a local base station may then be acquired. The mobile station may then compute a distance metric from the mobile station to the reference base station based on the at least one attribute, and the first and second locally unique attributes. The location of the mobile station may be determined based at least in part on the distance metric. In some embodiments, the distance metric may include a number of how many base stations away (i.e. “hops” or number of handovers) the mobile station is from the reference base station.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for estimating mobile station location include receiving reported signal strengths or other attachment indicator values from a mobile station. The reported signal strengths are compared with characteristic received signal strength values in a coverage area of a mobile network. A mobile switching center determines if a local function is requested and initiates a location estimation process by a mobile location module (MLM). The MLM receives the reported signal strength contours associated with the attachment points. Based on a comparison of the reported attachment indicator values with characteristic values, the MLM provides a mobile location estimate.

Abstract: A frequency compensation device, applicable to a user equipment (UE) communicating with a first base station (BS), includes a receiving module and a transmitting module. The receiving module has an offset detection unit for performing following steps. A first signal from the first BS at a first receiving frequency is received. A first transmitting frequency where the first BS transmits the at least one first signal is read. A difference between the first transmitting frequency and the first receiving frequency is calculated and used as a frequency difference. The transmitting module is for performing following steps. A BS parameter corresponding to the first BS is obtained. A frequency compensation value according to the BS parameter is calculated. A second transmitting frequency according to the frequency compensation value corresponding to the first BS is compensated. A second signal to the first BS at the compensated second transmitting frequency is sent.

Abstract: Provided are white space sharing control method, database device, agent device and communication system with which use of white space (WS) is controlled when a plurality of WS wireless devices compete for use of WS. In ST105, an application A proxy device arbitrates WS channel use requests received from a plurality of application A first WS wireless devices and combines these requests into one, and, in ST107, the application A proxy device transmits the arbitrated WS channel use request and location information to a frequency database apparatus. In ST108, the frequency database apparatus decides whether or not application A and application B are available on the basis of the “arbitrated WS channel use request and location information” and “priority ranking information according to use”. In ST109, the frequency database apparatus updates application A database information and application B database information on the basis of the decision result.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a touch screen display that is controlled based on information from a proximity sensor. The proximity sensor may have a light source that emits infrared light and a light detector that detects reflected infrared light. When the electronic device is in the vicinity of a user's head, the proximity sensor may produce data indicative of the presence of the user's head. Variations in proximity sensor output due to user hair color and smudges on the proximity sensor can be accommodated by using an electrical sensing mechanism in addition to the light sensing mechanism. The proximity sensor may include a pair of capacitive electrodes for generating an electric field in the vicinity of the device. The presence of a user's head can sufficiently disturb the electric field so as to produce data indicative of the presence of the user's head.
