Because the filter assembly length is at least twice the diameter measurement, a large surface area is possible while remaining compact. The filter assembly includes a cylindrical porous filter basket that is completely lined with a filter bag. The filter bag can filter particulate matter as fine as three hundred microns or less. The present filtering system can provide preliminary filtering before water is delivered for further conditioning by secondary filters, heater, or the like. The present filter permits fine filtering without constant clogging or maintenance. When maintenance is required, there is easy access for cleaning and replacement. Abstract: Integrated membrane treatment systems for treatment of an aqueous solution. In embodiments, components, such as an MBR, are integrated with means to recover energy from the system, for example from an RO concentrate, to operate the other components. In embodiments including biological treatment, RO is integrated with other components, such as an MBR with the ROs ability to remove inorganic nitrogen enabling biological treatment to be performed with only partial nitrification and the MBR operated without active pH control. In embodiments, RO is integrated with a chlorine generator to convert chlorides present in the RO concentrate for an in-situ source of oxidizing biocides for disinfection purposes. Chloramines may be generated in-situ from residual ammonia and chlorides in the RO reject. In embodiments, carrier media is employed in a membrane tank to enhance removal of residual organics by the MBR and to also improve effectiveness of membrane scouring.

Abstract: The nanocomposite for removing selenium from water is multi-walled carbon nanotubes impregnated with iron. The nanocomposite is made by dissolving iron nitrate in ethanol, adding the carbon nanotubes, heating the mixture to evaporate the ethanol, and calcining the resulting nanocomposite. The carbon nanotubes preferably have a length and a diameter between 10 nm and 30 nm, and the iron is homogenously distributed in the nanotubes as nanoparticles of 1-2 nm diameter. The nanocomposite adsorbs selenium from aqueous solution. The pH of the aqueous solution may be adjusted to between 1 and 4, adsorption being most efficient at a pH of 1.

Abstract: A water treatment method and a water treatment system that are capable of treating water containing salts to allow recovery of treated water at a high ion removal rate and a high water recovery rate, and allow recovery of high quality gypsum are provided. In the water treatment system, the water to be treated containing Ca2+ and SO42? is separated into concentrated water in which Ca2+ and SO42? are concentrated and treated water containing CO2 in a first demineralizer so that the treated water is recovered. The concentrated water in the first demineralizer is adjusted to a pH at which calcium carbonate can be dissolved and the scale inhibition function of a scale inhibitor is reduced, and then is delivered to a crystallizing tank. In the crystallizing tank, gypsum is crystallized from the concentrated water in the first demineralizer. The gypsum is separated and recovered in a separating section.

Abstract: A method for removing chloride from samples containing volatile organic carbon, wherein a chloride containing sample is mixed with a difficultly volatile acid, wherein hydrochloric acid gas arises, which is present in dissolved form in a sample-acid mixture and then the hydrochloric acid gas is purged by a carrier gas from the sample-acid mixture, wherein the hydrochloric acid gas is removed from the carrier gas following the purging and the carrier gas is fed back to the sample-acid mixture. In order during the hydrochloric acid purging largely to suppress the driving out of easily volatile organic compounds, the sample-acid mixture has a temperature of approximately 3° C. to 30° C., wherein, following the purging from the sample-acid mixture, the hydrochloric acid gas is removed from the carrier gas by absorption with water.
