  • Patent number: 9289848
Abstract: A wire cable configured to be attached to a wire cable terminal. An uninsulated end of the wire cable is formed into a nugget having a shape that generally defines a rectangular cuboid or rectangular prism. The nugget includes one face that defines a longitudinal concavity, indentation, or channel, which is oriented generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the wire cable. The nugget may be formed by ultrasonically welding the wire strands together. The concavity reduces the occurrence of fracturing the nugget when it is attached to the terminal by wire crimping wings. The wire cable may be formed of aluminum-based material. An apparatus for forming an end of a wire cable into a nugget shape having a longitudinal concavity and a method of attaching a wire cable having an end formed into a nugget shape having a longitudinal concavity to a terminal is also presented.

  • Patent number: 9289851
Abstract: A laser processing method of applying a pulsed laser beam having a repetition frequency of 20 kHz or more to a workpiece to thereby process the workpiece. The relation between the wavelength of the pulsed laser beam and the pulse width generating no cracks is determined by experiment on the basis of the absorption edge of the workpiece, thereby setting the processing conditions. The relation between various set values for the wavelength and the limits of the pulse width is plotted to prepare a graph having a vertical axis representing the wavelength and a horizontal axis representing the pulse width. The pulsed laser beam is applied in the region below a curve obtained by connecting the limits of the pulse width at the various set values for the wavelength.

  • Patent number: 9289852
Abstract: Laser processing machines and methods for adjusting focused laser beams. Laser processing heads have nozzle with openings admitting primary laser beam. An orientation device is included, as well as at least one sensor to mutually center primary beam and opening of nozzle. A first beam handling unit is arranged near the nozzle opening and may convert primary beam into a secondary wide-band heat beam, and then may emit this secondary beam towards a sensor; or may reflect/scatter at least a portion of the primary beam towards sensor. The sensor detecting the converted secondary beam is arranged within the laser processing head. In an adjustment process, a primary beam may be converted into a wide-band heat radiation as secondary radiation at the beam handling unit, and emitted and/or diverted into a scattered/reflex beam towards the sensor.

  • Patent number: 9289853
Abstract: A laser beam applying apparatus includes a laser beam oscillating unit, a focusing lens, and a diffractive optic element provided between the laser beam oscillating unit and the focusing lens for defining the spot shape of the laser beam oscillated by the laser beam oscillating unit. A zeroth-order light removing unit removes zeroth-order light emerging from the diffractive optic element and leaves first-order light whose spot shape has been defined by the diffractive optic element and the focusing lens. A first prism has an incident surface and an emergent surface inclined with respect to the incident surface. A second prism has a zeroth-order light reflecting surface for reflecting the zeroth-order light and a first-order light emerging surface from which the first-order light emerges. A damper absorbs the zeroth-order light reflected on the zeroth-order light reflecting surface of the second prism.

  • Patent number: 9289854
Abstract: Superalloy components, such as service-degraded turbine blades and vanes, are clad by laser beam welding. The welding/cladding path, including cladding application profile, is determined by prior, preferably real time, non-contact 3D dimensional scanning of the component and comparison of the acquired dimensional scan data with specification dimensional data for the component. A welding path for cladding the scanned component to conform its dimensions to the specification dimensional data is determined. The laser welding apparatus, preferably in cooperation with a cladding filler material distribution apparatus, executes the welding path to apply the desired cladding profile. In some embodiments a post-weld non-contact 3D dimensional scan of the welded component is performed and the post-weld scan dimensional data are compared with the specification dimensional data.

  • Patent number: 9289858
Abstract: A laser machining system is used to precision laser drill holes in an elastomeric material, preferably silicone rubber, to form holes to support miniature electronic components temporarily while they are being processed or tested. The holes are formed by directing laser pulses from a laser to a top surface of the elastomeric material in a plurality of passes in a direction proceeding from a non-zero inner diameter to the desired diameter or from the desired diameter to the inner diameter. The plurality of passes forms a first pattern such that a successive pass of the plurality of passes overlaps a previous pass of the plurality of passes. The first pattern is repeated without changing direction or the first pattern is repeated while reversing the direction until the hole is formed through a bottom surface of the elastomeric material.

Abstract: A method for forming pockets of a drill bit includes inserting a displacement plug in a cutter pocket defined by a substrate of a drill bit. A hardfacing material is applied to the substrate and the displacement plug using a plasma arc welding torch. The heat from the plasma arc welding torch reduces an oxide layer on the outer surface of the displacement plug, and the molten hardfacing material flows over the displacement plug and wets against the displacement plug.
