Abstract: A bimodal metal nanocomposite of ceramic nanoparticles in a metal or metal alloy matrix has a microstructure showing a first “hard” phase containing the ceramic nanoparticles in the metal or metal alloy matrix, and a second “soft” phase comprising only the metal or metal alloy with few or no ceramic nanoparticles. The stiffness and yield strength of the bimodal metal nanocomposite is significantly increased compared to the metal or metal alloy alone, while the ductility of the metal or metal alloy is retained. A process for making the bimodal metal matrix nanocomposite includes milling a powder mixture of micrometer-size metal flakes and ceramic nanoparticles for a time sufficient to embed the ceramic nanoparticles into the metal flakes.

A polygon with a polygonal hole in an interior is obtained. A Voronoi diagram of a set of line segments is obtained and modified to provide a modified Voronoi diagram (VD) having a cycle with one or more trees growing out. For each of the trees, a wave model is defined for a wave that starts at time t=0 on leaves on a boundary of the hole and moves through the tree to hit leaves on a boundary of the polygon at time t=1. A polyline spiral curve toolpath is created by travelling around the wave as it moves towards the boundary of the polygon. A pocket is milled in a solid piece of material by following the polyline spiral curve toolpath.

Abstract: A method for gas metal arc welding a first component formed of nitrided steel to a second component with reduced porosity in the weld is provided. A welding wire including a core surrounded by a tube is used to weld the components. The material of the core is formed of mild steel including 0.7 to 3.0 wt. % aluminum and 0.7 to 1.5 wt. % titanium. The material of the tube is formed entirely of low carbon steel. During the weld process, the nitrogen from the nitrided steel combines with the aluminum and titanium of the welding wire to form aluminum nitride and titanium nitride, instead of nitrogen bubbles which lead to high porosity. The method can be used to weld components used in automotive applications, for example to weld a ring gear and can of a flexplate, but alternatively could be used for another automotive or non-automotive applications.

Abstract: A method of producing a polishing head including: a backing pad, for holding a workpiece back surface, stuck on a lower portion of a rigid body; and a ring template, for holding a workpiece edge, disposed on a lower surface of the backing pad. This polishing head brings a front surface of the workpiece into sliding contact with a polishing pad attached on a turn table while holding the workpiece back surface on the lower surface of the backing pad. The method includes sticking the backing pad on the lower portion of the rigid body with a double-sided tape under a reduced pressure without heating; and sticking the template on the backing pad with a double-sided tape or a liquid or paste reaction curable adhesive containing no solvent under a reduced pressure without heating. This method can polish the workpiece into a very flat workpiece.

Abstract: A torque wrench having a handle and an output shaft is disclosed. The output shaft may be constrained to turn only unidirectionally due to a ratchet. Rotation of the output shaft may be permanently disabled by an internal mechanism. Torque imposed on the output shaft may be limited by a torque responsive cam clutch. The handle forms or is part of an enclosure enclosing internal components such as the ratchet, the internal disablement mechanism, and the torque responsive cam clutch. A seal between the body and the output shaft prevents ingress and egress of lubricants and contamination between the inside of the body and the output shaft.
