Patent number: 9339806Abstract: Industrial waste derived adsorbents were obtained by pyrolysis of sewage sludge, metal sludge, waste oil sludge and tobacco waste in some combination. The materials were used as media to remove hydrogen sulfide at room temperature in the presence of moisture. The initial and exhausted adsorbents after the breakthrough tests were characterized using sorption of nitrogen, thermal analysis, XRD, ICP, and surface pH measurements. Mixing tobacco and sludges result in a strong synergy enhancing the catalytic properties of adsorbents. During pyrolysis new mineral phases are formed as a result of solid state reaction between the components of the sludges. High temperature of pyrolysis is beneficial for the adsorbents due to the enhanced activation of carbonaceous phase and chemical stabilization of inorganic phase. Samples obtained at low temperature are sensitive to water, which deactivates their catalytic centers.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2012Date of Patent: May 17, 2016Assignee: RESEARCH FOUNDATION OF THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORKInventor: Teresa J. Patent number: 9339808Abstract: Surface-active solid-phase catalyst activity may be substantially improved by creating deliberate repetitive surface-to-surface contact between portions of the active surfaces of catalyst objects. While they are immersed in reactant material such contact between portions of the active surfaces of catalyst objects can substantially activate the surfaces of many heterogeneous catalysts. Examples are given of such action employing a multitude of predetermined shapes, supported catalyst structures, etc. agitated or otherwise brought into contact to produce numerous surface collisions. One embodiment employs a gear pump mechanism with catalytically active-surfaced gear teeth to create the repetitive transient contacting action during pumping of a flow of reactant. The invention is applicable to many other forms for creating transient catalytic surface contacting action. Optionally catalytic output of such systems may be significantly further improved by employing radiant energy or vibration.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2011Date of Patent: May 17, 2016Assignee: CCMI CorporationInventor: Mitchell A. Patent number: 9339813Abstract: The invention relates to a substance determining apparatus for determining a substance within a fluid. Particles attach the substance and bind to a binding surface (30), wherein a sensing signal is generated depending on the bound particles. Binding events indicating a binding of a particle on the binding surface (30) are determined from the generated sensing signal, and the substance within the fluid is determined based on the determined binding events. During a procedure of determining a substance within a fluid, particles may bind to the binding surface and may leave the binding surface. Therefore, during this procedure a number of binding events can be determined being much larger than the number of bound particles. The determination of the substance within the fluid can therefore be based on a very large amount of data, thereby increasing the accuracy of determining the substance within the fluid.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2010Date of Patent: May 17, 2016Assignee: KONINKLIJKE PHILIPS N.V.Inventors: Josephus Arnoldus Henricus Maria Kahlman, Joannes Baptist Adrianus Dionisius Van Zon, Johannes Joseph Hubertina Barbara Schleipen, Derk Jan Wilfred Klunder, Toon Hendrik Evers, Ron Martinus Laurentius Van Lieshout

Patent number: 9339845Abstract: The present invention aims to provide a surface modification method for a rubber vulcanizate or a thermoplastic elastomer, which can impart excellent sliding properties and durability against repeated sliding motion and can allow the surface to maintain the sealing properties, without using expensive self-lubricating plastics. The present invention relates to a surface modification method for modifying a rubber vulcanizate or a thermoplastic elastomer as an object to be modified, the method including: Step 1 of allowing a photopolymerization initiator to be adsorbed on a surface of the object to be modified; and Step 2 of radical polymerizing monomers, starting from the adsorbed photopolymerization initiator, by irradiation with UV light at a wavelength of 300 nm to 400 nm to grow polymer chains on the surface of the object to be modified.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2013Date of Patent: May 17, 2016Assignee: SUMITOMO RUBBER INDUSTRIES, LTD.Inventor: Yasuhisa Minagawa

Patent number: 9339849Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the processing of metal scrap, in particular steel scrap, wherein the metal scrap material is treated with at least one fluid with a view to removing surface coatings before a spectroscopic analysis of the metal scrap composition is performed. On the basis of this composition the metal scrap can then be sorted and further processed in a purposeful manner. Moreover, the fluid used for the removal of the surface coatings can be suitably treated to recover the metal constituents contained therein. On the one hand, a resource-conserving and economic recovery of metals, in particular zinc, contained in surface coatings is achieved by means of the inventive method and, what is more, the method also enables a purposeful sorting of metal scrap material to be performed for a variety of uses in the iron and steel producing industry.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2012Date of Patent: May 17, 2016Assignee: ProASSORT GmbHInventor: Hans-Bernd Pillkahn
