Abstract: A parafoil for operation at high altitudes, in low density air, or at low airspeeds, and methods for opening same. Some versions of the parafoil comprise flexible members connected to the parafoil canopy. When the parafoil canopy is in a stowed configuration, the members are deformed, storing elastic energy. When the canopy is released from its stowed configuration, the members spring back to their undeformed shapes, thereby opening or assisting with opening the canopy. The flexible member may also be attached to a base structure, which is attached to the payload. The members may comprise rods or hollow tubes that can be flexed using a fulcrum near the base structure, or a spacer plate, so that the ends connected to the canopy are restrained by a parachute bag containing the stowed or packed canopy. The parachute bag can be opened prior to or during detachment of the parafoil from the flight vehicle.

Abstract: A latch with a unique nesting toggle linkage that extends and retracts a hook via movement of an actuation handle. The linkage links have U-shaped lateral cross sections with a central channel into which the respective links nest when the latch is closed to minimize the overall volume of the latch. The links fold toward each other while closing to reduce the latch's overall length when fully closed. The components of the latch are arranged so that the center of gravity of the latch is positioned in front of a mounting pin; therefore, in applications where the latch swings in the vertical plane, the hook will necessarily hang downwardly away from the keeper when the latch is open. Optionally, a keeper detector prevents the actuation handle from closing if the keeper has not been first captured in the mouth of the hook. A rod-and-cylinder slide mechanism may be employed between the hook body and the mounting pin.

The airlock assembly includes a flexible, gas impermeable membrane that cooperates with a support wall in an airtight manner to form an interior pocket over the door on one side of the wall, and a distal-most rigid, rib structure generally disposed in said interior pocket. A gas displacement system, in flow communication with the interior pocket, is selectively operable to flow air out of the interior pocket, collapsing the membrane toward a deflated condition. An actuation system coupled to the distal-most rib structure is operable to displace the rib structure and the flexible membrane, in the deflated condition, away from the one side of the support wall, to a displaced condition. Such displacement of the airtight membrane creates a low pressure space in the pocket that is selected to be sufficiently proximate that of the low pressure environment.

A blow molding step is performed in which polyolefin resin, a thermoplastic resin exhibiting superior durability against disinfectants, is blow molded to obtain a hollow body. Next, a surface treatment step is performed in which a surface treatment is performed upon the entire surface of the hollow body, thereby improving the adhesiveness of the entire surface. Next, a filament winding step is performed in which reinforcing fibers impregnated with a thermosetting resin are wound around the surface of the hollow body and the outer surfaces of the flanges and heated in order to cure the thermosetting resin, thereby forming the fiber-reinforced resin layer on the surface of the hollow body and the outer surface of the flanges.

Abstract: A box having a base wall having an outer surface defined by a central region of a folded sheet, and one or more side walls forming a closed perimeter and extending from an inner surface of the base wall. Each side wall has spaced apart inner and outer layers being defined by a folded tab of the folded sheet, the folded tab defining an enclosure. A reinforcement ring is received in the enclosure defined by the folded tabs of the side wall(s). The reinforcement ring has a thickness greater than that of the folded sheet. A method of forming a box is also discussed.
