Abstract: A convenient, economical, nontoxic and effective method for the control of rats and the like by administration of one or more snap traps. In the preferred embodiment, rats are exposed to an attractant by means of a disarmed snap trap. In so doing, the rats frequent the disarmed snap trap thereby allowing the rats to feed from the snap trap without being harmed. After a predetermined period of time, preferably several days, the rats will no longer be suspicious of the snap trap because the rats can access the attractant with impunity. The method further requires baiting and arming a snap trap with an attractant after the rats have been allowed to feed from the one or more disarmed snap traps. The rats, unsuspectingly, approach the armed snap trap, which had previously been disarmed, and the spring-loaded trap arm will efficiently trap the rat.

Abstract: A canola germplasm confers on a canola seed the traits of high protein content and low fiber content, wherein the canola plant produces a seed having, on average, at least 68% oleic acid (C18:1) and less than 3% linolenic acid (C18:3). The canola seed traits may also include at least 45% crude protein and not more than 18% acid detergent fiber content on an oil-free, dry matter basis. Certain embodiments further comprise one or more traits selected from the group consisting of reduced polyphenolic content and increased phosphorous content. In particular embodiments, the invention concerns canola plants comprising such germplasm and plant commodity products (e.g., seeds) produced therefrom. Canola plants comprising a germplasm of the invention may exhibit favorable seed composition characteristics that make them particularly valuable as a source for canola meal.

Abstract: Disclosed is an animal feed composition that includes spent filter media and animal nutritive components. The spent filter media may be present in any suitable amount, such as about 0.1 wt. % to about 5 wt. % by weight. The spent filter media includes spent diatomaceous earth, organic carbon, activated carbon and water. Methods of promoting weight gain of animals by administering the animal feed composition are also disclosed. In some embodiments, feeding a herd of animals with the animal feed composition will promote weight gain in swine relative to an otherwise-similar animal feed composition that does not include spent filter media.

Abstract: A method for preparing a custom flavored snack food includes the provision of a quantity of a snack food that is at least partially cooked and at least one seasoning powder. The snack food is placed in a coating container with the at least one seasoning powder. The snack food is then coated with the at least one seasoning powder. The snack food coated with the at least one seasoning powder is subsequently heated to a predetermined temperature for a predetermined time to form the custom flavored snack food. The method may be practiced with a kit having the snack food, the at least one seasoning powder, the coating container, and the heating container. The heating container may have a removable panel that, when removed, provides access to a heating cavity for receiving and heating the coated snack food to form the custom flavored snack food.

Abstract: Gellan gum products having an increased bulk density are provided that include a gellan gum co-precipitated with a co-precipitation agent to form a co-precipitated gellan composition. The co-precipitation agent and the gellan gum are present in the co-precipitated composition in a weight ratio effective to produce the gellan gum product, in which the gellan gum product bulk density is greater than a bulk density of the gellan gum precipitated, dried, and milled without the co-precipitation agent. This greater bulk density is about 0.30 g/mL or greater. Methods are provided for preparing a gellan gum product having an improved bulk density, in which the gellan gum product bulk density is greater than a bulk density of the gellan gum precipitated, dried, and milled without the co-precipitation agent. This greater bulk density is about 0.30 g/mL or greater.
