Patent number: 9504952Abstract: A method for recycling a carbon-containing greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide and methane (natural gas) or a hydrocarbon homolog thereof. The method includes the steps of capturing the emissions, sequestering them in an underground or undersea storage area, withdrawing them from the storage area after storage therein, and converting them to carbon-containing compounds such as methanol, dimethyl ether and derived products. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane are chemically recycled to provide a permanent and inexhaustible supply of carbon-containing fuels or products, which subsequently can be combusted or used without increasing the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere. The method is thus effective in neutralizing or reducing the carbon footprint due to human activities related to combustion or use of carbon-containing fuels while providing a repeatedly sustainable carbon source.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 2011Date of Patent: November 29, 2016Assignee: University of Southern CaliforniaInventors: George A. Patent number: 9504954Abstract: In one example, we describe a method and system that uses iron oxide as its sole sorbent, specifically micron-sized nano-porous iron oxide particles. The sorbent is housed inside a horizontally rotating sorbent bed. The horizontally rotating sorbent bed is housed inside of a larger secondary compartment. At the top of the secondary compartment, there is an escaped sorbent particle containment membrane. One example uses a self-cleaning horizontally rotating sorbent drum membrane design that unclogs particulates lodged in the membrane by reversing particulate air flow direction during a small portion (e.g., about 20 degrees) of each full 360 degree rotation of the drum. When air flow passes through the porous horizontally rotating sorbent drum's membrane, which occurs at the location where the rotating sorbent bed membrane comes into contact with the air feed manifold, particulates are air-dislodged from the inner facing surface of the drum's membrane. Other variations are discussed.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2013Date of Patent: November 29, 2016Inventors: Timothy Wilder Rolf, Howard Martin Britton

Patent number: 9504991Abstract: A process for regenerating a silica-supported depleted alkali metal catalyst is described. The level of alkali metal on the depleted catalyst is at least 0.5 mol % and the silica support is a zero-gel. The process comprises the steps of contacting the silica supported depleted alkali metal catalyst with a solution of a salt of the alkali metal in a solvent system that has a polar organic solvent as the majority component. A re-impregnated catalyst prepared by the process of the invention any comprising a silica zero-gel support and a catalytic metal selected from an alkali metal in the range 0.5-5 mol % on the catalyst, wherein the surface area of the silica support is <180 m2/g is also described. The invention is applicable to a process for preparing an ethylenically unsaturated acid or ester comprising contacting an alkanoic acid or ester of the formula R1—CH2—COOR3, with formaldehyde or a suitable source of formaldehyde.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2013Date of Patent: November 29, 2016Assignee: LUCITE INTERNATIONAL UK LIMITEDInventors: Ian Andrew York, Trevor Huw Morris
