Abstract: A combined imaging probe holder and interventional needle guide assembly is provided. The imaging probe holder supports an imaging device (e.g., ultrasound probe) in a known relationship with a biopsy/treatment device holder such that a delivery element or interventional needle is constrained within an imaging field of the imaging device. Constraining the biopsy treatment device within the imaging field allows for real-time monitoring of the biopsy/treatment device during insertion of the interventional needle into patient tissue. In addition, the biopsy/treatment device holder is angularly positionable relative to the image field to allow advancement of the delivery element to any desired location within the imaging field.

Abstract: A steering adjustment for a needle visualization ultrasound system includes a needle, an ultrasound interface and one or more processing electronics. The ultrasound interface receives ultrasound imaging information from a first set of ultrasound firings. The processing electronics are coupled to the ultrasound interface. The processing electronics utilize the information from the first set of firings and identify the angle of the needle and the optimized steering frame angle. The processing electronics are further configured to cause a second set of firings. The second set of firings are configured for the identified needle angle and steering frame angle. The processing electronics are further configured to utilize the ultrasound information from the second set of firings to adaptively and dynamically enhance the visualization of the needle.

Abstract: Survival of patients suffering from many infections diarrheal diseases, including Ebola, as well as trauma and post-partum hemorrhage is improved with large-volume, parenteral, fluid replacement. In lieu of IVs, Intra-Osseous (IO) lines are placed with the help of a Humerus-Finder™, a one-piece guide that identifies the humeral head at the shoulder and allows for easy, safe, placement of an IO line. This guide enables healthcare providers and lay-providers to place IO lines and deliver fluids to infected persons without direct contact, limiting risk to providers. The Humerus-Finder™ makes early, potentially life-saving, supportive treatment available where large-volume fluid infusion can save lives and is useful in disaster medicine and emergency medicine when it is not possible to place an IV line rapidly and safely by helping first responders achieve IO access for delivery of fluid resuscitation in a safe, reliable manner.

  • Publication number: 20170020571
Abstract: Medical implants and implant components are formed by additive manufacturing processes. The additive manufacturing process used results in the implants or implant components having surfaces having a higher coefficient of friction as opposed to a similar implant manufactured using a different process, such as having a machined surface. The higher coefficient of friction of the relevant surface is particularly useful for multi-component implants that are to have a fixed relationship between the components based at least in part on a frictional engagement between them. While manufacturing via an additive manufacturing process may result in an implant component having slightly less strength for its size when compared with traditional manufacturing methods, the advantage of the increased coefficient of friction may offset any loss of component strength, and may allow for overall reduced implant size while maintaining other desirable implant characteristics.

Abstract: Devices and methods are provided for ablational treatment of regions of the digestive tract in post-bariatric surgery patients who fail to achieve or maintain the desired weight loss. Bariatric procedures include Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion, and sleeve gastrectomy. These procedures reconstruct gastrointestinal tract features, creating pouches, stoma, and tubes that restrict and/or divert the digestive flow. Post-surgical dilation of altered structures is common and diminishes their bariatric effectiveness. Ablation of compromised structures can reduce their size and compliance, restoring bariatric effectiveness. Ablation, as provided the invention, starts at the mucosa and penetrates deeper into the gastrointestinal wall in a controlled manner. Control may also be provided by a fractional ablation that ablates some tissue within a target region and leaves a portion substantially unaffected.

Abstract: A handpiece for injecting steam into a human or animal vessel in order to heat the vessel, including a steam generator for generating steam from a liquid and a connection member for connecting a catheter or a needle that is to inject the steam into the vessel. The steam generator includes a reservoir to contain the liquid, the reservoir being equipped with electrical heating means for heating the liquid in order to vaporize it and produce a stream of steam that diffuses via the connection member. The steam generator also includes a first nonreturn outlet valve interposed between the reservoir and the connection member for preventing fluid from passing from the connection member toward the reservoir. The first irst nonreturn outlet valve being a pressure-regulating valve which opens to allow steam to pass from the reservoir toward the connector when the pressure in the reservoir has reached a threshold value.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to devices, systems and methods for evaluating the success of a treatment applied to tissue in a patient, such as a radio frequency ablative treatment used to neuromodulate nerves associated with the renal artery. A system monitors parameters or values generated during the course of a treatment. Feedback provided to an operator is based on the monitored values and relates to an assessment of the likelihood that a completed treatment was technically successful. In other embodiments, parameters or values generated during the course of an incomplete treatment (such as due to high temperature or high impedance conditions) may be evaluated to provide additional instructions or feedback to an operator.

Abstract: A portable, battery powered electrosurgical wave generator is usable in performing electrically driven medical procedures. The wave generator can be small and lightweight to enable a user to carry and use the wave generator in non-operating room type settings. The wave generator can include a control unit that generates output signals in each of a cutting mode, coagulation mode, and a bipolar mode. The control unit can use a single circuit structure to generate the output signals for the cutting, coagulation, and bipolar modes. The output signals can be generated solely from a voltage produced by an incorporated battery within the generator.

Abstract: EMR applicators of an EMR applicator array are provided in an openable applicator housing to allow easy patient entrance to and exit therefrom so that the portion of the patient's body that contains the tissue to be treated can be positioned directly into the applicator housing without the applicator housing having to be moved along the patient's body. This can eliminate or reduce the need for full body supporting structure as part of the applicator housing. The applicator housing provides support for the portion of the body positioned therein, and support pads or pillows, separate from the applicator housing, can replace the need for a full body support as part of the applicator housing. The housing can reduce the size and complication of prior art applicator housings, and can be placed along with the patient, on a patient support surface, such as in a standard MRI system.
