  • Patent number: 9598858
Abstract: The present invention provides a thermal insulation panel (10) having two outer concaved layers (14, 16) and an inner tension (24) member formed by two substantially parallel panels (26,28). The peripheries of the layers and panels are secured to a thermal barrier (22) extending around the periphery of the panel (10) and a vacuum seal (25) seals the edge. In operation, a partial vacuum is created within the panel which causes concaved layers (14, 16) to flatten and tension panels (26, 28) to be placed under tension. This tensional loading creates a strong and rigid structure without the need for internal supports which can create thermal inefficiency.

  • Patent number: 9598862
Abstract: A resetting semi-passive stiffness damper (RSPSD) for use in damping movement. Embodiments of such a RSPSD include, for example, a pistoned cylinder connected to a grooved rack, and a spring-loaded lever arranged between the rack and a slotted channel above the rack. One end of the lever is allowed to move pivotably and vertically within the channel as the other end moves with the rack. A sensor is provided and communicates with a bypass valve on the cylinder. A change in the direction of movement of the rack forces the lever further into the slotted channel where it eventually triggers the sensor, which then sends a signal to open the bypass valve. As the rack continues to move, the lever eventually reverses direction, and is forced back down the slotted channel by a return spring. Upon leaving the sensing range of the sensor, the valve is signaled to close.

Abstract: A system and method that uses hidden hinges and mounts an article of furniture (such as a bookcase) or a door into a doorframe surrounding an opening in a wall or a building. The system and method comprise a vertical frame structure having a plurality of vertical segments that can be attached and detached to adjust the height of the vertical frame. The vertical frame is attached to the doorframe using two hinge modules, one near the top of the doorframe and other near the bottom of the doorframe. Each hinge module comprises linkages that rotate the vertical frame and facilitate the rotation of the hidden hinge mechanisms, attached vertical frame, and furniture article (or door) about a pivot point in an arc that spans at least 90 degrees from a closed position to an open position.

  • Patent number: 9598890
Abstract: A check system for selective movement between a frame and a door includes a link attached to one of the door and the frame, and a housing attached to the other of the door and the frame. The link defines a link friction surface. The housing defines a tunnel through which the link is selectively movable and a first housing ramp formed at an acute angle relative to the link. A friction plate is disposed within the housing, and defines a first plate ramp slidably engaged with the first housing ramp. The friction plate also defines a plate friction surface configured for contact with the link friction surface. A biasing member is operatively attached to the housing and biases the friction plate toward the link and the first housing ramp.

Abstract: Disclosed is quick-release removable cladding for interior fenestration frames, such as the interior frames of doors, window, skylights, or curtain walls. The cladding is held flush against the frame by a pair of brackets or alternatively by a bracket attached to frame and a shaped cavity within the cladding. In one aspect, the pair of brackets can be shaped and arranged so that when engaged, a downward force on the cladding causes the cladding to move flush against the frame. In another aspect, the cladding can be held securely in place to the frame by a keeper bar. The keeper bar can be configured to prevent upward movement of the cladding against the frame.

Abstract: A closure includes a panel closing against a frame. A set of abutment surfaces for supporting the panel against applied forces is completed by a displaceable abutment block which selectively assumes an engaged state disposed between an abutment surface of the panel and an abutment surface of a strike jamb. The geometry of engagement is such that forces acting on the abutment block opposing opening of the panel are primarily compressive forces. Certain implementations additionally, or alternatively, employ abutment blocks for locking along the lintel or the threshold of the opening.
