  • Patent number: 9696207
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving contrast in prism coupling measurements of waveguide mode spectra, wherein the measured waveguide sample has a surface region of rapidly decreasing index, characterized with normalized slope ? ? n ? ? n ? z ? > 0.0004 . An opaque light-blocking element is placed in the portion of the light beam closest to the plane of the contact between prism and measured sample, on the input side, output side or both sides of the prism. The light blocking element prevents light from the light source to reach a portion of the length of the prism-sample coupling interface along the optical path, prevents light reflected from a portion of the aforementioned length to reach the detector, or both when input and output light-blocking elements are used.

  • Patent number: 9696211
Abstract: A tunable light source having a temporal coherence length such that interference fringes are detected within the optical path difference of the interferometer is spectrally controlled to produce multiple wavelengths during sequential fractions of the integration time of the detector of the interferometer. The wavelengths are selected so as to produce a visible correlogram at each integration time according to spectrally controlled interferometry (SCI) principles. Such different wavelengths may be produced by stepwise or continuous modulation. The modulation step is repeated sequentially while changing the period of modulation to produce a succession of predetermined spatial patterns of interference fringes, as required for interferometric measurements. The approach enables the practice of SCI with common-path apparatus used for conventional phase shifting, thereby combining the advantages of high-coherence and white-light interferometry.

The method comprises: obtaining APU messages at multiple time points within a period; obtaining APU startup parameters including at least a rotation speed at a peak of EGT according to the APU messages; calculating a percentage NPA of the rotation speed when the exhausting gas temperature EGT reaches its peak at the APU startup stage relative to the rotation speed in the APU normal operation; calculating the average of the NPA within the period; and determining which of the stable, decline and failure phases the APU turbine efficiency is in according to the average of the NPA.

  • Patent number: 9696244
Abstract: A sampling device uses two ball valves that may be operated to take a sample while allowing flow to continue in a bypass path in a pressurized pipe. As one ball valve closes, it may capture a sample of liquid and gas that may be traveling in the pipe, then the sample may be discharged through a sampling outlet. The second ball valve may be operated simultaneously to open a bypass path while the first ball valve captures a sample. In some cases, the speed of actuation may be a function of the flow speed to capture an accurate sample. In other cases, the length of pipe from the sampling valve to the bypass junction may determine the effectiveness of the sample when actuation speed is relatively slow.

  • Patent number: 9696245
Abstract: Repeated simultaneous concentration measurements at spatially separated points are used to provide information on the lateral spatial extent of a gas plume. More specifically the spatial correlations in this data provide this information. Fitting a gas plume model directly to this multi-point data can provide good estimates of total plume emission. The distance between the plume source and the measurement points does not need to be known to provide these estimates. It is also not necessary to perform any detailed atmospheric modeling. These estimates of the lateral spatial extent of a gas plume can also be used to provide a distance estimate to the source of the gas plume. Wind direction information can be used to provide improved location estimates for sources of gas leaks.

Abstract: A sensor system (100) includes a reader (150) with a sensor unit (155, 156) and an accommodation Space (151) for an exchangeable cartridge (110). The cartridge (110) is held in the accommodation space (151) by at least one contact element (111) which has an increased thermal resistance and/or a contact area of reduced size. Thus a more homogenous temperature distribution can be achieved within the cartridge (110), reducing distortions which might adversely affect optical measurements.

Abstract: It has surprisingly been discovered that it is possible to stabilize biomolecules such as RNA, DNA and proteins in biological samples such as cells, tissues, biopsies and blood using deep eutectic solvents (DES). It has also been discovered that DES mixtures can be used to fix and preserve cell morphology in biological samples such as tissue blocks, cancer biopsies and whole blood. This invention describes methods to stabilize and preserve biomolecules, whole cells, tissues, blood and biological samples using DES mixtures.

  • Patent number: 9696248
Abstract: Mechanical, electronic, algorithmic, and computer network facets are combined to create a highly integrated advanced sensor that monitors the gas density, state-of-repair, and events associated with switchgear. Measurements of gas pressure, atmospheric pressure, gas temperature, are used with models of the non-ideal behavior of a particular gas to realistically estimate gas density. A hierarchical system of signal processing optimizes measurements working within high-frequency, real-time, short-term, medium-term, diurnal, long-term, and historical timeframes and overcomes measurement errors present in real-world applications. The time at which a condition such as gas density will reach a particular level is calculated. Events such as threshold attainments and switchgear operation are detected. A large memory stores all raw data values allowing flexible re-processing and verification at any future time.

Abstract: A soot sensing system includes a soot sensor having a first element, and circuitry to an amount of soot accumulated on the element and to control heating of the element in response to the soot accumulation. An electrostatic repelling voltage (ERV) may be applied to a sensor/heater element(s) during a contamination prevention mode (CPM) to repel ash and reduce contamination of the sensor. A pulsed heating voltage (PHV) may be applied to the elements during the CPM and a pulsed ERV may be applied to the elements during the “off” period of the PHV. All voltage to the elements may be turned off during the CPM and the elements may be floating/ground. A PHV may be applied to the elements during the CPM and no voltage may be applied to the elements during the “off” period of the PHV. A heating voltage may be applied to the elements during a CPM corresponding to a cold start.

  • Patent number: 9696250
Abstract: Systems and methods that provide relaxivity-insensitive permeability logs. At least some logging system embodiments include a logging tool assembly that measures spin-spin relaxation time distributions of formation fluid nuclei at different positions along a borehole. A processor operates on the measurements to provide a permeability log that is relatively insensitive to relaxivity coefficient changes and hence insensitive to changes in formation fluids. Thus, permeability logs will be relatively unaffected by invasion of the borehole fluids into the formation, even if surfactants in the borehole fluid cause large changes in formation wettability. For each position logged within a borehole, the processor may process the measured relaxation time distribution to determine a Swanson parameter value; adjust the Swanson parameter value to reduce dependence on relaxivity; and convert the adjusted value to a permeability measurement.
