The material may combine with the advancing molten pool to form a first raised track having an actual height. The layer may include the first raised track. A deposited region of the component may include the layer. The actual height may affect a resultant microstructure within the deposited region.

Abstract: A specially designed sonotrode and anvil are adapted to be used in combination for ultrasonic welding of work pieces, to produce a narrower weld region, but one exhibiting greater durability, thereby permitting use of less packaging material. The contact surfaces comprise a surface of the anvil having a plurality of energy directors, where the plurality of energy directors are arranged into a three-dimensional grid pattern to be capable of distributed vibration-transmissive contact. The energy directors may comprise a series of plateau surfaces being regularly spaced apart from each other in a first direction, and in a second direction that is orthogonal to the first direction, to form the grid pattern. The rectangular-shaped plateaus may be spaced apart by valleys. Engagement of the energy directors of the anvil with the corresponding surface of the sonotrode may cause minor elastic deformation of work pieces positioned therebetween prior to ultrasonic welding.

Abstract: A method for friction welding of inter alia coarse grain superalloy components, involving conditioning a shear zone of components to be welded by; a) pre-determining temperature profile for which the material of the shear zone of the components approaches viscoplasticity but does not undergo undesirable phase transformations, b) introducing friction at one or both surfaces of the components to be welded to provide a pre-defined quantum of energy sufficient to generate a peak temperature of the temperature profile at that surface whilst simultaneously applying pressure to the surfaces which is below a pressure which will cause upset at the surface, c) withdrawing the friction and/or pressure allowing the heat to disperse by conduction through the shear zone; d) after the temperature at the surface falls below peak temperature, repeating steps b) and c); and repeating step d) as necessary until the pre-determined temperature gradient is achieved throughout the shear zone.

Abstract: A laser processing device having a function for efficiently starting laser processing, while eliminating an adverse effect due to a reflected laser beam from a workpiece. The laser processing device has: a reflected beam intensity detecting part for detecting an intensity of a reflected beam, which is a part of a laser beam irradiated from a laser oscillator and then is reflected by a workpiece surface; a beam intensity increasing part for continuously increasing an intensity of the irradiating laser beam over a predetermined period of time; a next process selecting part for selecting a content of a next process, based on a temporal change in the intensity of the detected reflected beam, during the intensity of the irradiating laser beam is increased; and an executing part for executing the next process subsequent to the laser processing, based on the selected content of the next process.

According to the manufacturing method, the vapor chamber is manufactured without any additional support structure, but is still free from the problem of thermal expansion. Also, the vapor chamber can be thinned and lightweight.
