Abstract: The present application relates to a liquid crystal composition, a polarizing element and a use of the polarizing element. Since the polarizing element may be prepared by a simple coating process, the guest host type liquid crystal composition of the present application allows not only for reducing the manufacturing cost and lightweight thinning of the polarizing element, but also for manufacturing the polarizing element showing an excellent heat resistant stability without changes of absorption spectrum to transmission spectrum even in a severe condition such as high temperature environment. Such a polarizing element can be applied to various display devices such as liquid crystal display devices, EL display devices, field emission display devices, display devices using electronic papers, projection display devices or piezoelectric ceramic display devices.

Abstract: A large-scale tunable-coupling ring array includes an input waveguide coupled to multiple ring resonators, each of which has a distinct resonant wavelength. The collective effect of these multiple ring resonators is to impart a distinct time delay to a distinct wavelength component (or frequency component) in an input signal, thereby carrying out quantum scrambling of the input signal. The scrambled signal is received by a receiver also using a large-scale tunable-coupling ring array. This receiver-end ring resonator array recovers the input signal by imparting a compensatory time delay to each wavelength component. Each ring resonator can be coupled to the input waveguide via a corresponding Mach Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The MZI includes a phase shifter on at least one of its arms to increase the tunability of the ring array.

Abstract: External modulators, variable optical attenuators, optical gates, etc. employing Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) are a common structure within photonic integrated circuits and solutions for addressing the ever increasing demands for larger bandwidth and higher capacity in telecommunication and datacom networks. In most applications, but particularly data centers with potentially tens of thousands of optical links where direct board level applications would be preferred with CMOS compatibility, low power consumption is required. Equally, reducing the footprint of optical devices whilst increasing the functional integration on a line card for example does little for power consumption unless the device capacitance and drive voltage can be reduced as well. Accordingly, it would be beneficial to provide MZIs that require reduced phase shifts to reduce power consumption as the square of reduced applied voltage.
