Abstract: The present invention is based on the finding that enrichment of D3-creatinine in a urine sample following; oral administration of a single defined dose of D3-creatine can be used to calculate total-body creatine pool size and total body skeletal muscle mass in a subject. The invention further encompasses methods for detecting creatinine and D3-creatinine in a single sample. The methods of the invention find use, inter alia, in diagnosing disorders related to skeletal muscle mass, and in screening potential therapeutic agents to determine their effects on muscle mass.

Abstract: Plural medical device formed from one or more layers of thin film polymer are assembled from a single polymer coupon. Initially the coupon is bonded to a rigid substrate. Force, heat and a suction are selectively applied to the coupon to ensure that it has a consistent height across its exposed surface. Once the polymer coupon is bonded the components forming the medical device are attached to the coupon and the coupon is shaped to form the individual medical devices. Shaped sections of the coupon are then lifted off the rigid backing. The lifted off sections on which the components were attached are the medical devices.

Abstract: Various embodiments enable calibrating a non-invasive blood pressure measurement device by determining multiple parameters defining a stress-strain relationship of an artery of a patient. The device may obtain output signals from a blood pressure sensor at two or more measurement elevations. The obtained measurement signals may be filtered into AC and quasi-DC components, and results fit to exponential functions to calculate an arterial time constant and a veinous time constant related to vein draining/filling rates. The arterial and veinous time constants may be used to calculate an infinity ratio. The infinity ratio and the obtained sensor output may be used to calculate values for multiple parameters defining a stress-strain relationship of a measured artery. Once defined, this stress-strain relationship may be stored and applied to future sensor output signals (e.g., blood pressure measuring sessions) to infer patient blood pressure.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus measuring tissue nonlinear shear wave property are disclosed. When tissue shear responses are different to ultrasound radiation forces generated by pulses having different shapes, its nonlinear effect can be used to estimate tissue property at single location without measurements of group velocities or phase velocities. Ultrasound radiation force using a single tone burst pulse is applied to a selected location in a tissue region. The induced shear wave is detected in the region and its spectral distribution is calculated and analyzed. This detection may be repeated with other excitation pulses having different widths or different shapes at the same location. The spectral analysis of the detected shear wave is performed according to a nonlinear shear model for solving nonlinearity and viscoelasticity of the tissue at a single location in a tissue region.

Abstract: Systems and methods for medical imaging, specifically ultrasound imaging capable of achieving spatial resolutions that can resolve point objects smaller than 100 ?m irrespective of them to be well-resolved, using the principles of compressive sensing and sparse recovery are described. Ultrasound system uses the transmit transducers sequentially to sonicate the medium and the data is acquired over the receive transducers. The acquired signals are then sampled by the low-dimensional acquisition system. The signals are recovered using an optimization method before a frequency domain beamforming technique is applied. The time reversal focused frequency matrix is formed to focus the energy of different frequency bands into a single frequency.

Abstract: A Multiple Aperture Ultrasound Imaging system and methods of use are provided with any number of features. In some embodiments, a multi-aperture ultrasound imaging system is configured to transmit and receive ultrasound energy to and from separate physical ultrasound apertures. In some embodiments, a transmit aperture of a multi-aperture ultrasound imaging system is configured to transmit an omni-directional unfocused ultrasound waveform approximating a first point source through a target region. In some embodiments, the ultrasound energy is received with a single receiving aperture. In other embodiments, the ultrasound energy is received with multiple receiving apertures. Algorithms are described that can combine echoes received by one or more receiving apertures to form high resolution ultrasound images. Additional algorithms can solve for variations in tissue speed of sound, thus allowing the ultrasound system to be used virtually anywhere in or on the body.

Abstract: A biopsy device includes a body, a probe cannula, a cutter, a vacuum source, a tissue sample holder, and a flexible tube. The probe cannula extends distally from the body and defines an internal passage with a side aperture. The cutter is translatable relative to the probe cannula to sever a tissue sample received in the probe cannula. The vacuum source is in communication with the cutter. The tissue sample holder includes a vacuum port on the exterior surface to communicate with the vacuum source and a removable portion to hold solid tissue samples. The removable portion is selectively removable from the tissue sample holder and includes a straining member to separate fluids from solids. The flexible tube couples the tissue sample holder with the body such that the tissue sample holder is flexibly spaced away from the body.
