Abstract: A probe for an ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus which is used for performing a test upon a subject is provided. The probe includes a case which forms an exterior of the probe, a piezoelectric object which is provided on an inside of the case and which generates an ultrasonic wave, a sound absorbing layer which is provided at a rear surface of the piezoelectric object and which prevents the ultrasonic wave from being delivered to a rear portion of the piezoelectric object, an acoustic matching layer which delivers the generated ultrasonic wave to a subject by matching a sound impedance of the piezoelectric object with a sound impedance of the subject, and a sound lens which concentrates the generated ultrasonic wave and radiates the concentrated ultrasonic wave toward the subject.

Abstract: An ultrasound system is described which produces blended fundamental and harmonic frequency images. Successively transmitted, differently modulated pulses are transmitted by an ultrasound probe and both fundamental and harmonic frequencies are received in response. The echo signals received from the two pulses are processed by pulse inversion, producing cleanly separated bands of fundamental and harmonic signals in which undesired components have been cancelled. Since the two bands have been separated by signal cancellation rather than filtering, the two bands are allowed to overlap, providing broadband signals in each band. The bands are filtered by bandpass filtering to define the fundamental and harmonic signals to be imaged. The signals are detected, and the detected signals are combined after weighting to produce a blended fundamental/harmonic image.

Rather than requiring oversampling in time, the multiple spectra for one Doppler gate are created from different spatial signals. The Doppler gate is divided into sub-gates, the beamformed sample locations in the Doppler gate are grouped into two or more groups using any selection criterion, and/or different receive apertures are used to simultaneously sample the Doppler gate. Spectra for the gate are estimated from the samples with the different spatial content and then combined.

Abstract: Disclosed is a calibration system and method for a phased array ultrasound pipe inspection system, in which reliable calibration is obtained for notches at all angles using only a small number of notches for the calibration. The method comprises a one-time normalization step and a system calibration step which may be performed at regular intervals. Ultrasound transmission is in a single diverging beam for each aperture, while reception is selective for multiple well-defined reception angles. During the normalization step, plots of maximum response vs reception angle are plotted for each notch, and a normalization curve is constructed by fitting the maxima of these plots. The normalization curve is used to derive calibration targets at specific reception angles for specific calibration notches, which are then used for the system calibrations.

A thermographic image of both breasts of a patient is received and analyzed to determine whether there exists, in each of a left breast and a right breast, a hot spot comprising a patch of pixels with an elevated temperature with respect to surrounding tissue. If a hot spot has been identified in each breast then a measure of symmetry comprising a ratio of an area of a smaller hot spot to an area of a larger hot spot is extracted from the thermographic image. Abstract: The present invention contemplates a hand-held and hand-operable stitching device capable of securely placing a single interrupted suture through a wound using sterile suturing material with a single squeeze of the device's arms. Operating substantially faster than a surgeon, the compact and lightweight device employs an intuitive stapler-like structure and a center assembly capable of closing a wound with traditional suturing material secured by anchors that remain on either side of the wound. The apparatus employs needle-suture units stored in a center assembly and deployed individually when the device is actuated. When actuated, an epicyclic gear train within a center assembly causes a needle-suture unit to rotate through a circular path through the tissue, bringing the edges of separated tissue together. The suture thread is then secured in its position with anchors and the needle is then disjointed from the suture thread with a blade.

In an initial configuration of the clip, the distal end has a diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the hollow body. The distal end is held in an expanded condition for delivery into a patient. When deployed, the distal end collapses to its initial configuration to grasp onto captured leaflet tissue.

Abstract: Several embodiments are set forth of devices, systems and methods for modifying an atrial appendage such as a left atrial appendage (LAA). In one embodiment, a medical device includes a frame member and a tissue growth member. The frame member includes a unitary, seamless central portion having a plurality of struts defining a multi-cellular structure and an anchoring system, the plurality of struts extending between and configured to self-expand and directly bias the anchor system to anchor the frame member at least partially within the LAA. With this arrangement, the tissue growth member is attached to the frame member to occlude the LAA.

Abstract: Methods for treatment of a cerebral aneurysm within a cerebral vasculature of a patient are described. A microcatheter and a device for treatment of the aneurysm are provided. The device is a self-expanding resilient permeable shell having a plurality of elongate resilient filaments with a woven structure. The plurality of filaments includes small and large filaments. The filaments are bundled and secured to each other at a proximal end. A ratio of the total cross-sectional area of small filaments to the total cross-sectional area of large filaments may be between 0.56 and 1.89. The distal end of the microcatheter is advanced to a region of interest within a cerebral artery. The device is advanced through the lumen and out of the distal end of the microcatheter such that the permeable shell deploys and expands within the cerebral aneurysm. The microcatheter is then withdrawn from the cerebral artery.
