Abstract: A composite mat comprises a plurality of layers each comprising a plurality of elongate members extending parallel to one another and transversely to the elongate members forming the adjacent layer. Thus, each member of a first layer spans across the members of a second layer such that each member of the first layer intersects each one of the members of the second layer at respective intersecting locations. Each elongate member is formed from pultruded composite material defining a tubular body which encloses a longitudinal axis of the respective member. The tubular body has on its outside an opposing pair of wide faces and an opposing pair of narrow faces. The tubular body includes an interior cavity in which there is provided a reinforcing rib bridging the cavity in a direction from one wide face to the opposite one so as to resist compression of the body in this direction.

Abstract: A lightweight universal panel mat made of plastic or elastomeric material and having a first section that provides a relatively flat, textured or structured top surface to facilitate movement over the upper surface and a second section having geometry that includes a plurality of cells having top surfaces that support the first section. The panel mats also have first, second, third and fourth sides that are configured with tabular extensions or openings, slots or recesses configured and dimensioned to be able to receive the tabular extensions. At least some of the tabs and slots are configured to facilitate snap-locking. Thus, a plurality of similarly configured panel mats can be connected by interlocking of the tabs of one mat into the openings, slots or recesses of one or more adjacent similarly configured mats.

The sloped surfaces are configured to allow for overlapping with sloped surfaces other like mats for interlocking therewith while forming a generally flat continuous top and bottom surface of the overlapped mats. The mats may be interlocked by a fastening member which fits in aligned openings of the adjacent mats for connection therewith.

Abstract: Techniques for protecting joints in pavement structures are disclosed. Such a technique includes applying a hardener/densifier to one or more surfaces that define a joint in a pavement structure and, optionally, to portions of one or more surfaces that are located adjacent to the joint. One or more other compounds, such as hydrophobic materials, water-resistant materials, anti-scaling compounds, anti-wear compounds, multi-functional blended compositions and the like, may also be applied to the surfaces that define a joint and/or to portions of one or more surfaces that are adjacent to the joint. A seal may also be formed in a joint in a pavement structure. Joints that have been protected in accordance with teachings of this disclosure are also disclosed.
