Abstract: In an exterior fixing mechanism, an elastic body (7) having a groove (72) is provided in a first exterior member (1). A plate-like member (9) having a concave part (92) is provided in a second exterior member (2). When the first exterior member and the second exterior member are moved toward each other in a state in which the first exterior member and the second exterior member face each other, a circumferential edge of the concave part of the plate-like member is fitted into the groove of the elastic body and thus the first exterior member and the second exterior member are fixed. For this reason, the first exterior member and the second exterior member can be fixed in which the first exterior member and the second exterior member are merely moved toward each other and the elastic body is merely inserted into the concave part of the plate-like member.

Abstract: Devices image radiation from a scene that includes two materials with spectral characteristics in two different wavelength regions. A lens forms an image of the scene on a detector that includes an array of elements. A filtering arrangement integrated with the detector allows half of the detector elements to detect radiation in one of the wavelength regions and the other half of the detector elements to detect radiation in the other wavelength region. Each detector element can be constructed from two different sub-elements that are sensitive to radiation in one of the respective wavelength regions. A blackbody source positioned within the devices reduces drift induced by changes to the environment surrounding the devices. The blackbody source projects radiation onto a region of the detector that does not receive radiation from the scene. Pixel signals produced from the scene radiation are modified based on pixel signals produced from the blackbody.

Abstract: Nanoscale stress-sensing can be used across fields ranging from detection of incipient cracks in structural mechanics to monitoring forces in biological tissues. We demonstrate how tetrapod quantum dots (tQDs) embedded in block-copolymers act as sensors of tensile/compressive stress. Remarkably, tQDs can detect their own composite dispersion and mechanical properties, with a switch in optomechanical response when tQDs are in direct contact. Using experimental characterizations, atomistic simulations and finite-element analyses, we show that under tensile stress, densely-packed tQDs exhibit a photoluminescence peak shifted to higher energies (“blue-shift”) due to volumetric compressive stress in their core; loosely-packed tQDs exhibit a peak shifted to lower energies (“red-shift”) from tensile stress in the core. The stress-shifts result from the tQD's unique branched morphology in which the CdS arms act as antennas that amplify the stress in the CdSe core.

The system includes a belt having at least a first conductive component and/or at least a first dielectric component, and one or more pulleys to which the belt is mounted. At least a first of the pulleys has at least one conductive component that, in combination with the first conductive component or the first dielectric component of the belt, defines an electrical element. At least a portion of the electrical element is located within the belt so as to be physically responsive to transitory and permanent distortions of the belt resulting from extrinsic and/or intrinsic sources. Electrical potential is applied through the electrical element so as to generate an electrical signal from the electrical element corresponding to a physical response of the belt to a transitory and/or permanent distortion.
