Abstract: An engine control device controls a cylinder direct fuel injection type spark ignition engine provided with a fuel injection valve configured to directly inject fuel to a cylinder and an ignition plug configured to perform spark ignition for a gas mixture inside the cylinder. In a case where it is necessary to warm up an exhaust gas purifying catalyst disposed in an exhaust passage, the engine control device executes a catalyst warm-up operation in which a fuel is injected at a timing during the compression stroke, and at a timing when the fuel spray colliding with the piston crown surface moves toward the ignition plug along the shape of the piston crown surface, and in which the ignition timing is after compression top dead center. The engine control device advances the fuel injection timing in accordance with an increase in an estimation amount of a liquid fuel remaining on the top surface of the piston during execution of the catalyst warm-up operation.

The bush is formed separately from the fixed core, and is formed to be movable relative to the fixed core when adjusting a biasing force of the second spring. When a needle is abutting a valve seat, a gap is formed between a movable core first abutting face of the movable core and a flange end face of a flange portion included in the needle. Accordingly, during valve-opening, a relatively large force in a valve-opening direction is applied to the needle. Abstract: The present subject matter is directed to a system and method for detecting lifting of a ground brush of a generator of an electrical power system connected to a power grid so as to prevent damage to the electrical power system (e.g. bearing failure). The method includes monitoring, via at least one sensor, a voltage signal of a rotor shaft of the generator. The method also includes determining at least one characteristic (e.g. amplitude and/or frequency) of the voltage signal for a predetermined time period. Further, the method includes determining whether the at least one characteristic of the voltage signal is above a predetermined threshold, wherein the at least one characteristic of the voltage signal being above the predetermined threshold is indicative of the ground brush being lifted.

The shape-memory member takes, in the first stare, a flexible state in which it is easily deformable by an external force, so as to provide lower stiffness for the flexible member, and, in the second stare, a rigid state in which it tends to take a memorized shape against an external force, so as to provide higher stiffness for the flexible member. The actuator further includes a stiffness calculator that calculates the stiffness of the actuator.

Abstract: A propulsion system for spacecraft is based on an electric engine that expels propellant to achieve thrust. The propellant is first ionized to generate a plasma. Plasma particles are selectively accelerated via a pulsed laser that accelerates predominantly the electrons in the plasma. The electrons are expelled first, forming a space charge that acts as a virtual cathode to accelerate the positive ions. Interactions between the laser beam and plasma electrons are predominantly through the ponderomotive force.

Abstract: An electric control valve for a coolant compressor comprises a valve housing, an electric actuating drive, a valve body displaceable by the electric actuating drive between a first position and a second position inside the valve housing, a position sensor determining a position of the valve body, a suction-pressure sensor, and a control system. The control system is adapted to control a coolant flow from a high-pressure region into a crankcase-chamber-pressure region of the coolant compressor by controlling the position of the valve body via the electric actuating drive based on the suction pressure received from the suction-pressure sensor. The control system moves the valve body to the first position to connect the high-pressure region and the crankcase-chamber-pressure region if the suction pressure is below a predetermined threshold.

Abstract: A pump system includes a positive displacement pump, such as a diaphragm pump, an electric motor directly coupled to the positive displacement pump, and a programmable controller configured to maintain a desired current to the electric motor. The programmable controller is adapted to sense the current to the motor and to maintain constant current. It has been found that constant current provides constant torque and constant torque achieves constant fluid discharge pressure from the pump. The programmable controller utilizes an absorbed power formula to determine the correct current to achieve the necessary torque for a desired fluid discharge pressure. The programmable controller includes a power saving mode with minimal current and the pump is “dead headed” with no flow. The system is operated with a method that maintains constant fluid discharge pressure as well as having a power saving mode.

Abstract: A method for high fluid shear processing of a fluid uses an isolator that has a first sub-chamber for containing a first fluid and a second sub-chamber for containing a second fluid defined by a separator positioned in the chamber and movable between a first end of the chamber and a second end of the chamber. The two sub-chambers are in pressure communication with each other but are not in fluid communication with each other. A first fluid is pumped at an ultrahigh pressure into the first-sub chamber, and the pressure in the first sub-chamber causes a second fluid to be processed to be discharged from the second sub-chamber into a processing valve. A system is also provided for performing the steps of this method.
