  • Patent number: 9944352
Abstract: Apparatus and associated methods relate to remote control over a number of degrees of freedom of coupling between a first suspension member and a second suspension member. In an illustrative embodiment, when in an uncoupled state, the first suspension member may move substantially independently of any motion of the second suspension member. When in a coupled state, for example, the first suspension member may move in response to movement of the second suspension member. In some embodiments, the coupling between members may be altered by selectively permitting at least one degree of freedom of motion of the suspension system. For example, in some systems, a variable shock absorber may be selectively set to a fixed length in response to a control system signal. A remotely coupled suspension system may advantageously provide dynamically controllable suspension configurations for various riding conditions.

  • Patent number: 9944354
Abstract: An extendable and retractable lower deck for a watercraft is attached to and supported by one or more amidships hulls. The lower deck and hulls slide between an extended position and a stowed position on rails that are secured to the underside frame of the main, upper deck that is supported by abeam hulls. When fully extended, the extendable deck remains attached to the watercraft. A rotatable gate positioned within the lower hull can be used for improved accessibility to and from the water; the gate is stowed when its distal end is in the raised position and is deployed when its distal end extends below the bottom side of the hull into the water in the lowered position. Laterally expandable panels in the lower deck provide increased width, and other accessories used with the watercraft can be contained in one or more storage holds in the amidships hull.

  • Patent number: 9944355
Abstract: A submersible remotely operated vehicle with a streamlined shape, which uses an internal support lattice to provide pressure resistance. By using a lattice frame to distribute the water pressure load on the vehicle, the vehicle may be constructed of thin-walled, injection molded plastic, yet may be capable of diving to significant depths. The vehicle may provide pitch control using a single vertical thrust actuator that is horizontally fore or aft of the center of vertical drag; this efficient pitch control improves hydrodynamic efficiency by pointing the vehicle towards the direction of travel to minimize the coefficient of drag. The vehicle may communicate wirelessly with a remote operator via a communications buoy tethered to the vehicle, thereby eliminating cabling constraints on the vehicle's range from the operator. The tether may be connected to the buoy using a waterproof connector that presses three terminals surrounded by a compliant seal onto mating contacts.

  • Patent number: 9944356
Abstract: A shape shifting foil alters the shape of a fluid foil contour by rotating a leading edge structure. A skin that forms the fluid foil contour is at least partially attached to the leading edge structure, and is wrapped around the leading edge structure so two edges of the skin form the trailing edge of the fluid foil. The two edges forming the trailing edge slide with respect to one another, thereby permitting the skin to shift when the leading edge structure is rotated.

  • Patent number: 9944366
Abstract: A drone equipped with a camera, a wireless communication module, an acoustic sensor, a GPS receiver, software and collapsible floatation device patrols above swimmers. The camera and acoustic sensor capture the video and audio of the swimmers. The information is either streamed to a command center or processed by the onboard software. With audio and video analysis capabilities, software is used to detect a swimmer in distress (SID). Alternatively the information is streamed to lifeguard or volunteers all over the world to spot SID. • Patent number: 9944375
Abstract: A system for controlling trim position of a marine propulsion device on a marine vessel includes a trim actuator having a first end configured to couple to the marine propulsion device and a second end configured to couple to the marine vessel. A controller controls position of the trim actuator between an extended position wherein the propulsion device is trimmed up with respect to the vessel and a retracted position wherein the propulsion device is trimmed down with respect to the vessel. A shock relief mechanism overrides position control by the controller and allows extension of the trim actuator upon the occurrence of an overpressure event. An arresting mechanism, when activated, prevents extension of the trim actuator beyond a certain limit. Abstract: A lockable actuator has lock segments that move into recesses inside a piston to enable the piston to move. The lock segments may also move radially outwardly from the recesses in the piston to engage a bevel edge of a cylinder housing assembly to lock the piston. Lock rams having ramps force the lock segments radially outwardly into engagement with the bevel edge of the cylinder housing assembly.

Abstract: A stoppable rotor, which includes a first and second blade and rotates about a substantially vertical axis, is stopped with the first blade pointing forward and the second blade pointing backward while the aircraft is mid-flight. Anti-torque is provided using a set of one or more combination rotors in a first mode of operation in order to counter torque produced by the stoppable rotor when the stoppable rotor is rotating where the set of combination rotors rotate about a substantially longitudinal axis. Forward thrust is provided using the set of combination rotors in a second mode of operation when the stoppable rotor is not rotating.

  • Patent number: 9944390
Abstract: Technologies for managing assets of a data center include a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communicatively coupled to a remote computing device. The UAV is configured to navigate throughout a data center and capture data center mapping information during the navigation usable to generate a three-dimensional (3D) model of the data center. The UAV is further configured to transmit the captured data center mapping information to a remote computing device. Accordingly, the UAV can receive instructions from a remote computing device that define a type of task to be performed by the UAV in the data center and perform such a task (e.g., a data center map update task, an asset inventory task, a maintenance task, a visual inspection task, etc.) based on the received task instructions. Other embodiments are described and claimed herein.

Abstract: A system and method for a providing a dynamic backhaul. In one example, the system includes a self-positionable wireless device (for example, a drone) including a dual-band radio configured to establish a wireless connection between the self-positionable wireless device and a wireless system. The dual-band radio initiates a narrowband wireless link with the wireless system via a first narrowband antenna of the self-positionable wireless device and a second narrowband antenna of the wireless system. A navigation system generates location, velocity and error estimate of the self-positionable wireless device. The location is transmitted to the wireless system using the narrowband wireless link. The self-positionable wireless device receives via the narrowband wireless link location, velocity and error estimate of the wireless system.
