  • Patent number: 10004515
Abstract: A method and device for reducing the damaging effects of a blast or concussive event includes applying pressure to at least one jugular vein to reduce the egress of blood from the cranial cavity during the incidence of the concussive event. Reducing blood out flow from the cranial cavity increases intracranial pressure of the cerebrospinal fluid to reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury and injuries to the spinal column. Reducing blood out flow further increases the intracranial pressure, and thereby increases the pressure of the cochlear fluid, the vitreous humor and the cerebrospinal fluid to thereby reduce the risk of injury to the inner ear, internal structure of the eye and of the spinal column. In addition, increasing intracranial pressure reduces the likelihood of brain injury and any associated loss of olfactory function.

  • Patent number: 10004517
Abstract: A powered surgical tool that includes a housing with a head and a handle that extends from the head. An electric motor is disposed in the head. A trigger extends from the handle. There is a void space in the handle. A plate separates the motor from the handle. Internal to the handle void space there is a rotor sensor and a control circuit. The rotor sensor is able to monitor the magnetic fields emitted by the motor rotor and that pass through the plate. The control circuit receives signals from the rotor sensor representative of the rotational orientation of the rotor and is further able to monitor the actuation of the trigger. Based on the rotor orientation signals and the actuation of the trigger, the control circuit generates signals that result in the selective generation of power signals to the motor rotor.

  • Patent number: 10004551
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for the treatment of a body cavity or lumen are described where a heated fluid and/or gas may be introduced through a catheter and into treatment area within the body contained between one or more inflatable/expandable members. The catheter may also have optional pressure sensing elements which may allow for control of the pressure within the treatment zone and also prevent the pressure from exceeding a pressure of the inflatable/expandable members to thereby contain the treatment area between these inflatable/expandable members. Optionally, a chilled or room temperature fluid such as water may then be used to rapidly terminate the treatment session.

  • Patent number: 10004552
Abstract: An end effector structure (e.g. jaws structure or similar), configured with an internal antenna for delivery of electromagnetic energy in microwave range to a straight, curved or circular end effector structure in which the portion of end effector structure includes a microwave absorbing material that absorbs microwave energy emitted by the antenna and transfers microwave energy into the heat. Such end-effector also includes surgical fasteners or staples for strengthening tissue, providing a hemostasis, tissue joint and/or welding. The microwave antenna is connected by a coaxial cable with a microwave generator. The heat generated in the microwave absorbing material is applied to the treated material (e.g. tissue) by means of capturing material in the end effector (jaw structure) and heating the tissue to the desired temperature either before, during or after a stapling procedure.

  • Patent number: 10004561
Abstract: By utilizing a Mini-Primer strategy targeting the target site duplication (TSD) sequence of retrotransposons, INNUL markers, which include SINEs, LINEs, and SVAs, can be effectively used as markers for human identification and bio-ancestry studies regardless of the size of the inserted element. The size of the amplicons for INNULs and the difference between allelic states can be reduced substantially such that these markers have utility for analyzing high and low quality human DNA samples. A 15 RE marker and Amelogenin (for sex determination) multiplex for a single tube amplification of DNA, in four color detection was successfully designed. The multiplex provided power of discrimination suitable for forensic and paternity analysis. In addition, sensitivity of detection can enable human identity and bio-ancestry studies on forensic and anthropological samples. Depending on the distribution of the alleles in global populations, INNULs can be selected for human identity testing or for bio-ancestry studies.
