Abstract: A crankshaft lubricating oil passage structure of a V-shaped engine includes a main oil passage and a sub oil passage. The V-shaped engine includes a pair of banks. The pair of banks includes cylinders and is disposed in a V shape with respect to the crankshaft. The V bank angle as an included angle of the cylinders of the respective banks is set at a narrow angle. The main oil passage is provided between the pair of banks in the cylinder block or the crankcase. The sub oil passage extends from the main oil passage to the bearing portion of the crankshaft and guides lubricating oil to the bearing portion. The main oil passage is formed by connecting divided passage portions that are divided partway in an axial direction by an oil passage connection member that is a separate member from the cylinder block or the crankcase.

Abstract: A vehicle includes an engine that combusts an air/fuel mixture to produce an exhaust gas stream containing oxides of nitrogen (NOx). A dosing system injects an amount of ammonia (NH3) into the exhaust gas stream based on an initial NH3 injection set point value. A selective catalyst reduction (SCR) device absorbs an amount of the NH3 contained in the exhaust gas stream and reduces an amount of NOx. An electronic hardware controller predicts an NH3 slip condition during which a portion the absorbed NH3 will slip from the SCR device, and modifies the initial NH3 injection set point value based on the predicted NH3 slip condition. The controller further generates a modified NH3 injection set point signal indicating an adjusted amount of the NH3 to inject during the predicted NH3 slip condition. The dosing system adjusts the amount of injected NH3 based on the modified NH3 injection set point signal.

Abstract: A method for heating an electrically heatable catalytic converter in an exhaust duct of a motor vehicle having a combustion engine. To heat the catalytic converter prior to a start of the combustion engine, the catalytic converter should already be electrically heated prior to the start of the combustion engine, and the oxygen storage capacity of the electrically heatable catalytic converter should be filled. Thus, an efficient exhaust-gas aftertreatment is made possible already at the start of the combustion engine. A further heating of the catalytic converter by a combined electrical and chemical heating takes place following an electrical preheating phase after the start of the combustion engine by the exothermic reaction of unburned fuel components on a catalytically active surface of the electrically heatable catalytic converter. Also, a motor vehicle having a combustion engine and an exhaust system in which a method according to the present invention is implemented.

Abstract: An intershaft seal assembly comprises an annular seal ring disposed between a pair of annular runners connected to a co-axial inner rotating shaft and a surface of a hollow outer rotating shaft. The centrifugal force resulting from rotation of the co-axial inner rotating shaft effects engagement of the annular seal ring with the surface of the hollow outer rotating shaft. The surface may be a radially-inward-facing surface of a retaining arm connected to the hollow outer rotating shaft. A lubricious coating is applied to one or more of the interfaces between the seal ring and adjacent components such as the runners and the retaining arm. The lubricious coating may maintain the coefficient of friction between the interfaces between the seal ring and adjacent components below 0.4 at the maximum rotational speed of the seal ring.

Abstract: An engine comprising: a fuel injection device including a rack and an actuator, the rack being configured to regulate the amount of fuel injected to a combustion chamber, the actuator being configured to control the position of the rack; and a control device that controls fuel injection performed by the fuel injection device based on an instructed revolution number, and that performs a dither control on the actuator, wherein the control device has information of a revolution number variation region that is based on the relationship between a dither frequency in the dither control and an engine revolution number, and upon determining that the instructed revolution number is within the revolution number variation region, changes at least one of the dither frequency and the instructed revolution number. Thus, an engine capable of reducing a periodic variation in engine speed which may be caused by a dither control is provided.

The engine interrupt is configured to selectively stop the operation of the engine. The internal combustion engine-based system includes a controller in communication with the engine interrupt. The internal combustion engine-based system includes a carbon monoxide detector in communication with the controller. The controller uses the engine interrupt to stop the operation of the engine when the carbon monoxide detector provides the controller with signals that are representative of a carbon monoxide level proximate the internal combustion engine that together form a trend of building carbon monoxide amounts over a set time interval.

Abstract: When it is determined that the igniting environment is out of the desired range, the variable valve mechanism is controlled so that the swirl ratio is increased. When the swirl ratio becomes high, the discharge spark and the initial flame move largely in the flow direction of the swirl flow SW and approach the closest fuel spray. Therefore, the discharge spark and the initial flame are attracted to the closest fuel spray and the initial flame enlarges by involving the closest fuel spray (middle stage of FIG. 7). Further, the initial flame enlarges further by involving surrounded fuel spray (lower stage of FIG. 7).
