Abstract: An apparatus and methodological framework are provided, named perfusion angiography, for the quantitative analysis and visualization of blood flow parameters from DSA images. The parameters, including cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral blood volume (CBV), mean transit time (MTT), time-to-peak (TTP), and Tmax, are computed using a bolus tracking method based on the deconvolution of time-density curves on a pixel-by-pixel basis. Individual contrast concentration curves of overlapping vessels can be delineated with multivariate Gamma fitting. The extracted parameters are each transformed into parametric maps of the target that can be color coded with different colors to represent parameter values within a particular set range. Side by side parametric maps with corresponding DSA images allow expert evaluation and condition diagnosis.

Abstract: In at least one embodiment, X-ray images of a human examination object acquired via X-ray equipment are each spatially-resolved in a plurality of dimensions. In each case, one dimension extends in the head-foot direction of the examination object. The respective body region is detected in the X-ray images in steps that are equidistant in the head-foot direction and, based on this, the water-equivalent diameter of the examination object is determined in a plane orthogonal to the head-foot direction. The water equivalent diameters determined for each respective position is stored with allocation to the X-ray images and the respective position in the head-foot direction.

Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system produces contrast enhanced images which are processed differently during different stages of contrast agent wash-in. During an initial stage of contrast wash-in, imaging is done using pixels processed by maximum intensity detection, to better reflect the rapid change in contrast intensity. During a later stage of contrast wash-in, time averaged processing is used to diminish the effects of noise and motion on the pixel values. During an intermediate period of peak enhancement, a combination of both pixel values processed by both techniques is used. In another aspect, a wash-in period can be characterized by an appearance stage, a growth stage and a peak stage, in which contrast pixel data is adaptively processed in different ways during these periods.

Abstract: A suture locking free needle formed with an eye with a locking slot open to the eye. The locking slot secures a suture passed through the eye in order to prevent unthreading of the suture from the needle during use. The locking slot is narrower in width than the width of the corresponding suture so that suture forms an interference fit with the locking slot thereby preventing the suture from being released from the needle when the suture encounters the friction from tissue during use. In use, once the surgical suture is threaded into the surgical needle, the suture is pulled upward into the locking slot in order to hold it securely in place.

Abstract: An exemplary surgical method includes possessing a loader that holds a curved-tip cartridge, and a surgical stapler that includes an anvil and channel at a distal end thereof; causing at least one of the loader and the channel to move toward the other; as a result of the causing, engaging the loader and the curved-tip cartridge with the channel; and causing at least one of the loader and the channel to move away from the other, such that the curved-tip cartridge remains engaged with the channel. That method further may include actuating the surgical stapler; grasping the unloader; sliding the unloader toward the channel; disengaging the curved-tip cartridge from the channel with the unloader; and withdrawing the unloader away from said channel, wherein the withdrawing causes the curved-tip cartridge to disengage from the channel.

Abstract: A surgical stapling system including a shaft assembly transmits actuation motions from an actuator and an end effector compresses and staples tissue. The end effector comprises an channel; an anvil having a staple forming surface is moveable relative to the channel between open and closed positions; the anvil having a magnet at the distal end; and a staple cartridge removably positionable within the channel. The staple cartridge comprises a body supported for a confronting relationship with the anvil in its closed position; a plurality of staple drivers located within the cartridge body support a staple; a Hall effect sensor located at the distal end of the body; and a microprocessor in communication with the Hall effect sensor. The Hall effect sensor and microprocessor receive power when the staple cartridge is positioned within the channel, and the system is operable to identify the staple cartridge.

Abstract: A shunt device for creating a shunt in an atrial septum includes magnets coupled to inner loops of a coil comprising at least two inner loops and two outer loops, with a diameter of each of the inner loops being less than a diameter of the outer loops. The coil is made of a shape memory alloy (SMA) and is adapted to exert a compressive force upon layers of tissue caught between the inner loops of the coil. The magnets are adapted to provide additional compressive force to adjacent inner loops of the coil, thereby further causing the coil to cut through the layers of tissue and create a shunt. The diameter of the resultant shunt is less than the diameter of the outer loops, thereby preventing the outer two loops from passing through the created shunt. At least one end of the coil has a connection means for connecting with a delivery device.
