Abstract: The invention relates to an interstitial ultrasound ablation device (5) for being inserted into tissue surrounding, for instance, a tumor. The interstitial ultrasound ablation device comprises an arrangement (7) of ultrasound units (17, 18) for a focal ablation treatment which is modifiable from a folded configuration, to be used while inserting the ultrasound ablation device into the tissue, to an unfolded configuration, to be used after the ultrasound ablation device has been inserted into the tissue, such that the unfolded arrangement of ultrasound units is next to the tumor. This ultrasound ablation device can be easily positioned close to the tumor, where the unfolded arrangement of ultrasound units provides a large ultrasound emission area allowing for a very good focusing of the ultrasound on the tumor. This can lead to a very effective ablation of the tumor with only very few or no unwanted side effects.

The abrasive elements can be attached to a distal portion of an elongate flexible drive shaft that extends from a handle assembly that includes a driver for rotating the drive shaft. In particular implementations, individual abrasive elements are attached to the drive shaft at differing radial angles in comparison to each other (e.g., configured in a helical array). Abstract: A method of automatically registering a surgical navigation system to a patient's anatomy is provided. The method comprises programming a surgical navigation system with a first spatial relationship between a surgical component and a reference array connected to the surgical component, programming the surgical navigation system with a second spatial relationship between an anatomical feature of a patient and the surgical component, installing the surgical component on the patient such that the surgical component engages the anatomical feature in the second spatial relationship, and locating the reference array with the surgical navigation system. The navigation system automatically recognizes the position of the reference array relative to the patient's anatomy.

Abstract: A method, system and apparatus for surface rendering using medical imaging data is provided. A display device is controlled to render a first model of imaging data showing depth positions corresponding to a given surface threshold value, and further controlled to replace the first model with a second model of the imaging data showing respective depth positions corresponding to the given surface threshold value, the second model being faster to compute than the first model. The given surface threshold value is changed to an updated surface threshold value, for example using a slider input. The display device updates rendering of the second model to show updated respective depth positions corresponding to the updated surface threshold value. When an acceptance is received, the display device is controlled to replace the second model with the first model showing updated depth positions corresponding to the updated surface threshold value.

Abstract: A probe navigation methods and devices for use in medical diagnoses and procedures are provided. A probe that is inserted in a walled area within a subject has a distal end on which at least first and second opposing transducers are mounted. The transducers track movement of the probe end with respect to the walls of the walled area. The distal end of the probe may closely approach a wall to enter an area such that the first transducer is no longer able to properly sense it, commonly referred to as a blanking region. Tracking information of the movement of the probe away from an opposing wall generated by the second transducer is then used to provide tracking of the distal end of the probe relative to the wall the first transducer is no longer able to sense.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for tracking the position and orientation of one or more objects in three dimensional space is disclosed. One or more tracked sensor units are each connected with a respective object. Each tracked sensor unit includes one or more light sources and an inertial measurement unit. One or more position sensitive detector tracking devices track the position of the tracked sensor units. Each position sensitive detector tracking device includes a plurality of position sensitive detector sensors combined with optical lenses that focus light from a larger field of view onto each position sensitive detector sensor. The position and orientation of each object in three-dimensional space is calculated from the output of the inertial measurement unit of the respective tracked sensor unit and the output of the one or more position sensitive detector tracking devices in response to light emitted from the one or more light sources of the respective tracked sensor unit.

Abstract: A computer-implemented medical data processing method for controlling a geometric status of a mechatronic articulable arm. Current geometric status data is acquired describing a current geometric status of the mechatronic articulable arm defined by a set of current spatial relationship between connected elements of the mechatronic articulable arm. Changed geometric status data describing a changed geometric status of the mechatronic articulable arm defined by a set of changed spatial relationship between the connected elements is determined based on current device position data, the current geometric status data, changed device position data, and device definition data. Instruction data describing an instruction for changing the geometric status of the mechatronic articulable arm from the current geometric status to the changed geometric status is determined. The instruction describes changes from the current spatial relationship to the changed spatial relationship.
