Abstract: An apparatus includes a memory configured to store traveling data items indicating chronological changes in positions of vehicles, in association with first angular information indicating an angle of a first movement direction of a vehicle with respect to a reference direction, where the first movement direction is identified by a pair of positions among first multiple positions indicated by each of the traveling data items. The apparatus acquires positioning data indicating chronological changes in a measured position of a target vehicle, and searches for a target traveling data item corresponding to the positioning data from the memory, based on second multiple positions indicated by the acquired positioning data and second angular information indicating an angle of a second movement direction of the target vehicle with respect to a reference direction, where the second movement direction is identified from a pair of positions among the second multiple positions.

Abstract: Systems and methods for robotic mapping are disclosed In some exemplary implementations, a robot can travel in an environment. From travelling in the environment, the robot can create a graph comprising a plurality of nodes, wherein each node corresponds to a scan taken by a sensor of the robot at a location in the environment. In some exemplary implementations, the robot can generate a map of the environment from the graph. In some cases, to facilitate map generation, the robot can constrain the graph to start and end at a substantially similar location. The robot can also perform scan matching on extended scan groups, determined from identifying overlap between scans, to further determine the location of features in a map.

Abstract: A device, and corresponding method, can include a pump light source configured to irradiate a target specimen. The device can also include a sensor configured to observe a probe speckle pattern based on light from a probe light source reflected from the target specimen. The device further may include a correlator configured to determine a material property of the target specimen by analyzing changes in images of the probe speckle pattern as a function of the irradiation with the pump light source. Advantages of the device and method can include much higher sensitivity than existing methods; the ability to use visible probe wavelengths for uncooled, low-cost visible detectors with high spatial resolution; and the ability to obtain target material properties without detecting infrared light.

Abstract: A method for spectral filtering an input optical signal is described. The filtering system uses Brillouin gain inside an interferometer. The interferometer is biased to null signals that propagate without Brillouin gain, but due to asymmetric levels of gain in the interferometer arms the interference null is disturbed for signals of an optical frequency that experience Brillouin gain. The filter thereby preferentially passes signal frequencies that are inside the Brillouin gain bandwidth creating a high extinction ratio filter. The narrow bandwidth of the Brillouin gain effect can allow for spectrally narrow filters such as 30 MHz. The filter can be realized in a stable Sagnac loop configuration even if the pump and signal are combined prior to the Sagnac loop by using a power control device such as an attenuator placed asymmetrically inside the loop. The filter can achieve net gain and can be designed to have a tunable bandwidth.
