  • Patent number: 10525467
Abstract: This disclosure provides an integrated and automated sample-to-answer system that, starting from a sample comprising biological material, generates a genetic profile in less than two hours. In certain embodiments, the biological material is DNA and the genetic profile involves determining alleles at one or a plurality of loci (e.g., genetic loci) of a subject, for example, an STR (short tandem repeat) profile, for example as used in the CODIS system. The system can perform several operations, including (a) extraction and isolation of nucleic acid; (b) amplification of nucleotide sequences at selected loci (e.g., genetic loci); and (c) detection and analysis of amplification product. These operations can be carried out in a system that comprises several integrated modules, including an analyte preparation module; a detection and analysis module and a control module.

  • Patent number: 10525472
Abstract: Apparatus, methods, and systems for automated liquid droplet manipulation include an open droplet supporting surface. An actuator can translate the surface in space with at least one degree freedom of movement to influence movement of one or more droplets on the surface. In one embodiment, the surface is patterned with areas that attract the droplets and interstitial areas that repel the droplets to enhance transport of droplets. For example, for water-based droplets the attracting areas can be hydrophilic and the repelling hydrophobic. In one embodiment, the repelling areas are superhydrophobic. Electromechanical movement of the surface avoids expensive and complex microfluidic fabrication and components, and avoids electrowetting requirements.

By opening an on-off-type hot-melt adhesive supply control valve, which is attached to the coater head, at a timing that an adhesive opening (the slot) on the bottom surface of the coater head faces application zones on the pattern surface of the pattern roller, the hot-melt adhesive is supplied only to the top surfaces of the pattern roller protrusions.

Abstract: This invention discloses a method for controlling nanoscopic wetting near or at a molecular scale for synthetic material applications. In particular this invention relates to a method for preparing a monolayer or thin film with a patterned nanoscopic wetting surface using a ‘sitting’ phase of polymerizable amphiphile, wherein hydrophobic alkyl chains of the amphiphile extend along the supporting surface and the amphiphile molecules align side-to-side, effectively forming a repeating cross-section of bilayer with alternating hydrophilic and hydrophobic stripes of a ˜6 nm pitch tunable based on the chain length of the amphiphile. Products prepared according to the methods disclosed herein are within the scope of this invention. In some embodiments, monolayers or thin films so prepared are transferable.

  • Patent number: 10525508
Abstract: The present invention has an object to provide a blowing apparatus wherein a piezoelectric element is unlikely to cause insulation deterioration leading to burnout during use of the blowing apparatus. The blowing apparatus of the present invention blows compressed gas supplied from a compressed gas supply unit through a nozzle hole of a nozzle unit by opening a piezoelectric valve. The blowing apparatus comprises a humidity sensor detecting a humidity of the compressed gas inside a flow path unit, and a humidity control unit comparing a detected value of the humidity detected by the humidity sensor with a set value. If the humidity of the compressed gas inside the flow path unit detected by the humidity sensor is equal to or greater than the set value, the humidity control unit replaces the compressed gas inside the flow path unit with the compressed gas whose humidity is less than the set value and which is supplied from the compressed gas supply unit, before starting to use the blowing apparatus.

Abstract: A sorting conveyor has pivotally mounted flaps for sorting articles into sorting outlets as a function of a sorting indication affixed to each of the articles. The conveyor includes a monitoring and control unit designed to cause each flap to pivot between a closed position in which the flap forms a conveyor portion suitable for conveying an article in a certain conveying direction and an open position in which the flap interrupts conveying of an article on the conveyor to deflect it towards an appropriate sorting outlet. The monitoring and control unit is also arranged to retrieve thickness data from a memory giving a certain thickness for the article to be deflected, and to respond by causing the flap to pivot into an open position through a certain opening amplitude determined as a function of the thickness data about the article that is to be deflected.

  • Patent number: 10525515
Abstract: A method for deriving the position of a pushing roll, applied even when there is a difference between the actual processed shape and a theoretical solution (a numerical analysis solution) due to changes in a state of a processing machine or the bending characteristic of the material to be processed. The rolls have a pyramid-like shape, and the operation amount of a pushing roll is changed while continuously feeding a material, thereby bending the material. Also, for each position of the fixed pushing roll, the radius of curvature of the material is measured and the bending characteristic is grasped in advance. From the design shape, the radius of curvature and the operation amount for bringing the pushing roll into contact are obtained. The operation amount of the pushing roll is then determined.
