Abstract: Natural products were screened for their insect repellent activity, and carrot seed essential oil gave very high activity in biting repellent/deterrent bioassays. Analysis of the oil revealed the presence of 47 compounds, mainly mono- and sesqui-terpenes. The sesquiterpene, carotol, constituted more than 75% w/w of the oil. In the initial screening, the essential oil gave high biting deterrent activity and high repellent activity comparable to DEET against both Aedes aegypti and Anophies quadrimaculatus species of mosquitoes. The active fraction mainly comprises pure carotol. The essential oil and the pure compound have a potential to be developed and used as effective repellent against mosquitoes.

Abstract: A method to process microalgae biomass and produce high-value chemicals from microalgae biomass is disclosed. The method uses the same biomass cells to extract more than one component such as are lipids, water-soluble chemicals, carotenoids, polysaccharides and algae meal. The method is a sequence of physical and chemical treatments. Water soluble polysaccharides produced by the method exhibit properties of low viscosity at low shear thinning. A method for extracting dietary fiber from microalgal biomass is disclosed. Compositions of water-soluble polysaccharides that are fermented slowly by colon microbiota with less gas production than commercial dietary fiber FOS are disclosed. The present inventions described herein provide a method of improving colon health by increasing butyrate during a microalgal dietary fiber fermenting process by colonic microbiota.

Abstract: A heat-transforming ceramic roasting cylinder and a coffee bean roaster using the same are provided. The ceramic roasting cylinder is made by grinding and mixing ball clay, kaolin clay, mullite, spodumene, and an energy ceramic material into a clay blank; molding the clay blank into ceramic green bodies; and sintering the ceramic green bodies at 1250˜1320° C. for 18˜24 hours. The ceramic roasting cylinder has an internal roasting space where coffee beans are loaded. The ceramic roasting cylinder also has evenly distributed capillary pores through which heat can circulate to induce the energy ceramic material in the roasting cylinder to release negative ions and far-infrared rays. The far-infrared rays can reduce the van der Waals forces between the oil molecules in the coffee beans instantly, splitting large oil molecules into smaller ones, ensuring the oil in the beans are released sufficiently, evenly, and rapidly to the vicinity of the bean surface.

The present example provides a method for mechanically de-stemming whole peppers. The method provides for the recognition of a pepper's shoulder and or interior regions and stem in order to generate a control signal to initiate a process to de-stem the pepper. In particular, several implementations of the method are provided that may include a mechanical system, a laser system, a machine vision system, a combination of a machine vision system and the laser system, and other equivalent implementations. Additionally disclosed, are methods of processing whole peppers utilizing automated de-stemming.
