Abstract: A standard powder bed fusion additive manufacture apparatus is provided with a device to modify the building space, including the powder feed for the building space, yielding a reduction in the active build area, with a concomitant reduction in the adjacent powder supply. A retrofit kit or assembly which is quickly emplaced on the existing equipment with little modification of the regular building space is provided, and is therefore readily removable when the building space is to be returned to its original condition. One advantage is the relatively quick manner in which the building space can be modified. A reduced area build piston is slideably received in a shaft depending from a cover that is emplaceable on the unmodified build area. The build piston moves with the pre-existing build platform. A like arrangement is provided for the feed container.

Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling a material extrusion device to extrude a filament of an ink are provided. An extrusion printing control system collects from one or more sensors measurements representing an internal state of material extrusion processing during extrusion of the filament. In addition, the system collects an image of the filament as the filament is extruded. The system applies a classifier to the collected image to generate an image-derived state characterizing the filament. Based on the internal state and the image-derived state, the system estimates a derived state using a model. The system determines control parameters using the model to achieve a desired quality of the filament by minimizing a cost function based on the internal state, the image-derived state, the derived state, and constraints of the material extrusion device. Finally, the system provides the control parameters to a controller of the material extrusion device.

Abstract: This disclosure describes various methods and apparatus for characterizing an additive manufacturing process. A method for characterizing the additive manufacturing process can include generating scans of an energy source across a build plane; measuring an amount of energy radiated from the build plane during each of the scans using an optical sensor; determining an area of the build plane traversed during the scans; determining a thermal energy density for the area of the build plane traversed by the scans based upon the amount of energy radiated and the area of the build plane traversed by the scans; mapping the thermal energy density to one or more location of the build plane; determining that the thermal energy density is characterized by a density outside a range of density values; and thereafter, adjusting subsequent scans of the energy source across or proximate the one or more locations of the build plane.
