  • Patent number: 10668536
Abstract: First subareas of a layer of powder applied on a substrate are heated locally with a process beam so as to heated, but not yet interconnect the grains of the powder in the first subareas. A temperature profile of the applied layer is evaluated proximate to the first subarea as a function of the distance from the respective first subarea and/or the time. The local thermal conductivity and/or local diffusivity are determined for the respective first subarea based on the temperature profile. Second subareas of the applied layer which at least partially overlap the first subareas are then heated locally with the process beam so as to interconnect the grains of the powder in the second subareas. A process variable of the process beam influencing heating of the second subareas is determined based on the local thermal conductivity or diffusivity previously determined for the at least partially overlapping first subarea.

Abstract: The wire feed mechanism includes a feed roll, a pressure roll, a pressure arm, and a pressure mechanism. The feed roll rotates around a rotation axis. The pressure roll is displaceable relative to the feed roll. The pressure arm has a first end and a second end that are separate from each other, and rotatably supports the pressure roll. The pressure mechanism engages with the pressure arm so that a pressure force is applied from the pressure roll to the feed roll with a wire held between the feed roll and the pressure roll. A force-receiving portion is provided at an end of the pressure arm. When the pressure roll presses the feed roll, the pressure mechanism applies a force to the force-receiving portion in a direction that is substantially parallel to the direction in which the wire is fed.

Abstract: A plasma computer numerically controlled (CNC) cutting machine is controlled by a computer s. In an embodiment, the computer executes a CNC program to control movement of a plasma torch to cut parts from a workpiece while a spectrometer determines emissions spectra of light emitted in a brief time window as the torch begins to cut the workpiece. The spectrometer cooperates with the computer to analyze the metal as it is being cut by the CNC cutting machine and determine a composition. In embodiments, the composition is compared to an expected composition and saved in a database with identifying information; in a particular embodiment the database is queried to provide identifying information of metal having similar composition to the workpiece.

Abstract: A welding tip (20) for spot welding a first part (22) formed of conductive metal, for example aluminum, to a second part (24) formed of aluminum or another conductive metal, such as steel, is provided. The welding tip (20) includes a notch (30) at a distal end (38) and a convex contact surface (28) extending radially outwardly and upwardly from the notch (30) for engaging a surface of the first part (22). The rotating welding tip (20) forms a depression (32) on the surface of the first part (22) during the welding process. The notch (30) creates a pin (34) in the center of the depression (32) which provides a fixed axis of rotation for the rotating welding tip (20) and prevents the welding tip (20) from moving radially relative to the fixed axis, thereby improving the quality of the final spot weld (36) and reducing process time.

Abstract: A direct resistance heating simulation method is provided. In this method, a welding region and its peripheral region of steel sheets to be welded by a pair of electrodes are divided into a plurality of elements. A coupled analysis is performed such that a temperature, a metal structure, stress and strain at each element are determine in a mutually associated manner based on Joule loss obtained through a current analysis and a magnetic field analysis for each element. The coupled analysis is repeated to predict an effect of one or more parameters, including at least one of a frequency, a magnitude and an application time of electric current to be applied to the electrodes, a cooling time, a pressure applied from the electrodes to the steel sheets and a shape of the electrodes, on welding quality after a post-heating by direct resistance heating and to improve weld strength.

Abstract: A spot welding electrode of a donut-shaped electrode wherein even when a welded member of a steel sheet is slanted with respect a plane perpendicular to an axis of the spot welding electrode, a cross tensile strength (CTS) of the spot welded joint can be improved. The donut shape spot welding electrode according to the present invention has an electrode tip and an electrode support. The electrode tip contacts the electrode support to be able to move. Due to this, it is possible to strikingly raise the ability of the donut-shaped electrode to track a steel sheet and make the entire surface of the donut shape contact-and-conduction part contact the steel sheet, so it is possible to secure a high CTS value even if the steel sheet is slanted.
