Abstract: The present invention is directed to a system for delivering radiofrequency ablation energy to an area or volume of tissue. The system includes a wrap, where a stiffening element surrounds an opening in the wrap, where the stiffening element transfers radial compression to the area or volume of tissue, where the radial compression increases stability of the area or volume of tissue; and at least one radiofrequency ablation probe having an active electrode, where the at least one radiofrequency ablation probe is connected to a radiofrequency generator via a lead. A device that includes a wrap and a method of delivering radiofrequency ablation energy to a volume of tissue via the device are also described.

Abstract: A device for fixing the outer boundaries of a region of body tissue in a secondary plane (and optionally in a tertiary plane) during medical imaging, examination, and/or intervention. The caliper device includes a caliper bar with two sliding caliper arms that provide fixation of the region of tissue in the secondary plane. One embodiment provides tertiary fixation with a center plate fixator that extends from a center plate positioner. The caliper device is positioned around the region of body tissue within the primary plane fixation instrumentation. The caliper arms (and optionally, the center plate fixator) move together to “thicken” the region of tissue between them. The device is preferably constructed of radiotransparent material and for single-use applications.

Abstract: A C-arm, or a mobile intensifier device, is one example of a medical imaging device that is based on X-ray technology. Because a C-arm device can display high-resolution X-ray images in real time, a physician can monitor progress at any time during an operation, and thus can take appropriate actions based on the displayed images. Monitoring the images, however, is often challenging during certain procedures, for instance during procedures in which attention must be paid to the patient's anatomy as well as a medical imaging device display. In an example, a surgical instrument assembly includes a processor, a surgical instrument configured to operate on an anatomical structure, and a display coupled to the processor and attached to the surgical instrument.

Abstract: A sequentially deployed prosthetic cardiac valve includes a self-expanding frame having an atrial skirt, a ventricular skirt, and an annular region disposed therebetween. A first anterior tab is disposed on an anterior portion of the frame. A posterior tab is on a posterior portion of the self-expanding frame. The frame may be designed so that any portion may expand sequentially in any desired order. For example, a portion of the first anterior tab and a portion of the posterior tab may partially self-expand first. Next, the first anterior tab may fully self-expand before the posterior tab fully self-expands. The posterior tab may fully self-expand next followed by the ventricular skirt, or the ventricular skirt may self-expand next followed by full expansion of the posterior tab.

Abstract: The present application provides an implantation method of an artificial heart valve. The implantation method can include forming an incision in the left chest to expose the ventricle; advancing a guide wire kept away from chordae tendineaes through the atrium into the ventricle; advancing a guide wire catcher into the ventricle from the incision to pull out the distal end of the guide wire from the ventricle; and advancing the artificial heart valve into the ventricle from the distal end of the guide wire with a valve deliverer, and placing the artificial heart valve at a primary valve between the ventricle and the atrium along the guide wire. The artificial heart valve may avoid the chordae tendineaes in the heart system through the guide wire track during implantation.

Abstract: A method for optimizing a shape of a replacement valve leaflet, wherein the shape of the replacement valve leaflet is determined by defining variable parameters of the replacement valve leaflet. The variable parameters may comprise: a valve height; a leaflet coaptation height, a first set of two control points for a first B-spline plane of symmetry; and a second set of two control points for a second B-spline plane tangent to a frame of the valve. The method may further comprise creating iterations of potential shapes of the replacement valve leaflet by changing one or more of the variable parameters using modeling software. The method may also comprise calculating the maximum stresses or strains on each of the potential shapes.
