Abstract: A carbon material for contaminant removal performance. The carbon material having an equilibrium pH (pHeq) between about 1.5 and about 9, a total acidic functionality (TAF) between about 0.8 and about 3 mequiv./g-C and a cation sorption capacity of greater than about 70 cmmol/kg-C. The carbon material identified by determining an pHeq of the carbon material contacted with an electrolyte solution. The carbon material identified by quantifying TAF by acid-base titrations. The carbon material identified by generating a proton binding curve from the acid-base titrations. The carbon material identified by integrating the calculated f(pK) distribution from the proton binding curve. The carbon material identified by determining equilibrium isotherms and converting the data into a cation sorption capacity. The carbon material identified by comparing the cation sorptive capacity of the carbon material to a predetermined range of cation sorptive capacity to identify the carbon material.

Abstract: Porous three-dimensional networks of polyimide and porous three-dimensional networks of carbon and methods of their manufacture are described. For example, polyimide aerogels are prepared by mixing a dianhydride and a diisocyanate in a solvent comprising a pyrrolidone and acetonitrile at room temperature to form a sol-gel material and supercritically drying the sol-gel material to form the polyimide aerogel. Porous three-dimensional polyimide networks, such as polyimide aerogels, may also exhibit a fibrous morphology. Having a porous three-dimensional polyimide network undergo an additional step of pyrolysis may result in the three dimensional network being converted to a purely carbon skeleton, yielding a porous three-dimensional carbon network. The carbon network, having been derived from a fibrous polyimide network, may also exhibit a fibrous morphology.

Abstract: A reaction furnace for producing a polycrystalline silicon according to the present invention is designed so as to have an in-furnace reaction space in which a reaction space cross-sectional area ratio (S=[SO?SR]/SR) satisfies 2.5 or more, which is defined by an inner cross-sectional area (So) of a reaction furnace, which is perpendicular to a straight body portion of the reaction furnace, and a total sum (SR) of cross-sectional areas of polycrystalline silicon rods that are grown by precipitation of polycrystalline silicon, in a case where a diameter of the polycrystalline silicon rod is 140 mm or more. Such a reaction furnace has a sufficient in-furnace reaction space even when the diameter of the polycrystalline silicon rod has been expanded, and accordingly an appropriate circulation of a gas in the reaction furnace is kept.

Abstract: A reactor 200 according to the present invention includes a heater storage section serving as a space section capable of accommodating a carbon heater for initial heating of silicon core wires. A carbon heater 13 is loaded in a deposition reaction space 20 in the reactor 200 only when necessary for initial heating of silicon core wires 12. After initial heating of the silicon core wires 12 is finished, the carbon heater 13 is unloaded from the deposition reaction space to the heater storage section 30. As a result, the carbon heater 13 is not unduly damaged in the reactor any longer and its deterioration is reduced. In addition, because of reduction in reaction with hydrogen gas in the reactor, the generation of methane is reduced, and thus carbon contamination of polycrystalline silicon is reduced.

The high purity calcium carbonate is obtained by using a precipitation catalyst, filtering out the impurities, then precipitating a high purity calcium carbonate. Alternatively, the lower purity calcium carbonate may be dissolved in acid, impurities filtered out, then a high purity calcium carbonate is precipitated out using a soluble carbonate salt.

Abstract: Previous hybrid-anion and cation-redox (HACR) cathodes were limited in cycling performance by irreversible anionic redox reactions caused by the loss of anions. To overcome this limitation, a lithium (Li) transition metal (M) oxide particle is described having a Li concentration gradient. In one example, the particle includes a Li-rich core region that provides capacity and energy density due anionic and cationic contributions and a Li-poor surface region surrounding the core region to inhibit anionic activity and thus substantially reduce the loss of anions. A gradient region disposed between the core and surface regions has a Li concentration profile that varies from a first Li concentration in the core region to a second Li concentration in the surface region. A high-temperature leaching method may be used to leach LiO from a Li-rich Li1+xM1?XO2 particle, thus forming a coherent Li gradient with a stabilized layered structure.

Abstract: A system for recovering fat, oil and grease (FOG) from wastewater has multiple annular flotation zones in a concentric configuration surrounding a central column to create progressively increasing surface areas for FOG and solid particles flotation. Each flotation zone may be equipped with an independent pressurized micro air and/or ozone bubbles distribution system. The FOG is recovered in the first flotation zone without chemical additions. Coagulant and flocculant may be added in the second flotation zone to maximize removals of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), and colloidal particulates and produce clear effluent. Magnesium chloride is added in the third flotation zone to remove phosphorus and to form struvite particulates that can be used as fertilizer. Since both organic loading and solid loading in the treated effluent are significantly reduced, poultry processing plants can more easily meet wastewater treatment plant discharge limits and avoid surcharges.
