Abstract: A foot presence sensor system for an active article of footwear can include a sensor housing configured to be disposed at or in an insole of the article, and a controller circuit, disposed within the sensor housing, configured to trigger one or more automated functions of the footwear based on a foot presence indication. In an example, the sensor system includes a capacitive sensor, and the sensor is configured to sense changes in a foot proximity to the sensor in footwear. Information about the sensed proximity can be used to determine a foot velocity characteristic, which in turn can be used to update an automated footwear function, such as an automatic lacing function, or can be used to determine a step count, foot strike force, a rate of travel, or other information about a foot, about an activity, or about the footwear.

The lace take-up mechanism can include structures such as a double-yoke, a radial pulley including an outer rotating disc and an inner stationary disc, a variable take-up spool, or a zip-strip mechanism.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to articles that include a tightening mechanism, such as reel-based lace tightening mechanism, configured to tighten the article by rotation of a knob. The articles can include a concealing portion that is configured to conceal or protect at least a portion of the tightening mechanism, such as the knob. The concealing portion can be configured to prevent unintentional actuation of the tightening mechanism, such as during contact sports. The concealing portion can be configured to hide the tightening mechanism from view to improve the visual appearance of the article. The concealing portion can be collapsible such that a user can press the concealing portion down to expose the knob of the tightening mechanism.

When the knob is rotated relative to the case in a tightening direction, the spool is not affected by the locking unit and is allowed to rotate in the tightening direction for fastening the lace. As the knob is engaged with the housing via an engagement between the mounted portion and the engaged portion, the housing, the locking unit, the knob and the spool are combined and restricted.

Abstract: A compression-expansion locking device for an article of luggage and an expandable article of luggage comprising one or more such devices is disclosed. In one embodiment, the device comprises a housing member having two or more columns of parallel housing teeth protruding from an inside surface, and a ratchet member movably disposed over the inside surface and comprising complimentary protruding teeth to releasably engage the housing teeth and a release projection disposed in a slot extending along the axial direction of the ratchet member. A release member slidaby disposed within the slot comprises an internal camming surface which when pulled over the release projection by the users urges the ratchet teeth away from the housing teeth to permit movement between the housing and ratchet members. A release button which can be engaged, e.g., by a user's thumb, can be connected to the release member to permit further convenient one-handed operation.

In general, a hair dryer includes a heater configured to heat air for output from the hair dryer. The hair dryer is configured to heat the air with the heater using phase control. The phase control is configured to control the heater to heat the air to a desired temperature (e.g., to a particular desired temperature or within a desired temperature range) while reducing periodic current draw on the hair dryer's AC input. The phase control is configured to control the heater according to predetermined phase angles in an AC power cycle. The methods, systems, and devices for phase control heater control can be used with devices other than hair dryers that use heaters for heat control, such as space heaters.
