Abstract: In a method of ventilating excised lungs, a ventilation gas is supplied to an airway of a lung and a vacuum is formed around the lung. A quality of the vacuum is varied between a lower level and a higher level to cause the lung to breathe, while the pressure of the ventilation gas supplied to the airway is regulated to maintain a positive airway pressure in the airway of the lung. The vacuum may be cyclically varied between the two vacuum levels. The levels may be maintained substantially constant over a period of time, or one or both of the lower and higher levels may be adjusted during ventilation. The lung may be placed in a sealed chamber, and a vacuum is formed in the chamber around the lung.

Abstract: The present invention relates to feed compositions that can modify the feeding behavior of animals. Supplements can be added to no or low roughage rations that improve the performance of animals. In particular, the addition of calcium chloride to a low or no roughage ration can increase the number of feedings but decrease the amount of feeding per meal. This can result in promoting enhances feed conversion and better cost of feed to weight gain.

Abstract: Some embodiments are directed to systems and methods for treating a viscous fluid. The viscous liquid may be a liquid sugar. The viscous fluid may have a viscosity of at least 50 cP. The system may include one or more mixers configured to receive the viscous fluid and to generate turbulent flow of the viscous fluid; and one or more UV chambers configured to receive the viscous fluid from the mixer and to expose the viscous fluid to a dose of UV light, the dose being at least 250 mJ/cm2. The system may deliver a total dose of UV light of about 500 mJ/cm2 such that bacteria and other contaminants are reduced or eliminated.
